The Smartest Woman I’ve Ever Met Beverli Always Keeps Me on My Toes

When I left the priesthood in 2003, I thought I knew about relationships. I had friends of all sorts, professional relationships, business relationships. I look back now and think, ‘What a fool!’ I had no clue. In many ways, I was blinded by my past experiences, training, and environment. As the expression goes, I was a ‘Babe in the woods’ — inexperienced innocence entering unaware into potentially dangerous or hostile situation (Webster Dictionary). I did know one thing for sure. I wanted a wife who was as smart or smarter than me. I’m easily bored. ADHD. I needed someone with whom I could interact in a profound way, share ideas, talk about serious matters. One of the expressions that I frequently use that my wife, Beverli, does not like— among many — is: “the only thing worst than not getting what you want is getting what you want.”

woman I had found. Mason, my soon-to- be stepson, saw my expression. He gave me the look, ‘You’re busted. Don’t deny it. Beg for forgiveness and make the best of the situation.’ Then, he slinked out of the room. “Thanks, buddy. I’ll remember this when you need help.” It was the first time in our relationship that I thought it might not work. She was reading my mind. I was scared. I mentioned it to my Dad, who was alive at the time. He seemed to understand. He sympathized then confessed that was the reason he had not thought a thought in decades. It was easier AND safer for Mom to tell him what to think. That was not consoling. I liked thinking. Especially my own thoughts. I was concerned. Fast forward to 21 years later, I’ve learned to not let the Jedi mind control tricks affect me — most of the time. Bev is a Doctor of Physical Therapy. She graduated from the UNMC program in 2011. I got to go through gross anatomy. Bev had to dissect a human body for an entire semester. She had nightmares and couldn’t eat meat for weeks. We did flash cards together. Classmates spent long hours and overnights studying for exams. Finally, the tortured stop. Graduation. Then I happened to bump into the owner of a physical therapy clinic the day I started a new job. My office was next door. I got Bev an interview with the owner. The next week, Dr. Bev started stretching, exercising, and torturing patients.

Administration) and then into a specialized service of pain management for veterans who had experienced traumatic injuries.

Recently we have experienced a lot of changes. The new presidential

administration came into office downsizing government agencies — though the VA has supposedly to be spared for the time being. Our son, Mason, had a seizure April 11th. He was in a coma at various levels for a year and eventually passed on March 30th. Medicare itself went through tremendous upheaval this past year. I had personnel change over in my office. A lot has happened. I probably would have lost my hair if I had any to lose. As part of that, Bev took an early retirement from the VA and has joined me in my Medicare practice. I have hoped for this for years. She is incredible. I could go on about why she is incredible and how it is going to benefit you, but I will let you be the judge. Before she was a physical therapist, she was in hospital administration. She is getting everything to run on schedule, including me. Every day is a joy on so many levels. I have never been this happy in my life. If you stop by the office and see me kissing on an attractive redheaded employee, it is not sexual harassment. It is workplace motivation. I’ve noticed over the years; she has started to adopt some of my pet phrases.

So, from June of 2003 to April of 2004, I dated. Not something I need to discuss.

On April 16, 2004, I went on my first date with Beverli Shumaker. She was 39 years old. I was 42. She was smart. Very smart. I was happy — I thought. One day after several months of dating, I was standing in Bev’s living room. I was thinking about something. She called me out on it.

I can’t remember what I was thinking. It doesn’t matter.

All I remember is that she read my mind. I was scared. I didn’t know what kind of

Medicare Insurance Made Easy

A NEW LAW COULD AUTOMATICALLY ENROLL YOU IN MEDICARE ADVANTAGE MEDICARE UPDATE:

Medicare is complicated. The rules, the choices, and the fine print can overwhelm even the most careful person. That’s why it’s important to keep an eye on new proposals in Washington, D.C., because changes in the law can affect your coverage and pocketbook. THE BILL YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT In May 2025, Congress introduced a proposal called H.R. 3467 . If passed, starting in January 2028, it would: • Automatically place people with Medicare Part A and Part B into a Medicare Advantage plan with a lower out of pocket cost in their area. • If multiple plans are tied for the lower cost plan, the government will pick one for you. • Once enrolled, you can “opt out,”

3. Review Your Plan Annually. Costs, plans, and networks change every year. 4. Get Knowledgeable Help. Medicare doesn't have to be a maze; you don't have to do this alone. FINAL THOUGHTS Automatic enrollment into Medicare Advantage may sound convenient, but convenience doesn’t always mean quality care. Your healthcare decisions deserve more than a lower out of pocket shortcut. They deserve careful thought, professional guidance, and a plan tailored to your life and health.

• That means your care could cost more than you expect.

but if you stay, you’re locked into that plan for three years before you can change.

WHY PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE WITH A LICENSED INSURANCE AGENT IS ESSENTIAL Choosing the right Medicare plan based on your needs is one of the most important decisions you make. It affects:

At first, this might sound like a relief as there's one less decision. However, the lower out of pocket cost plan is not always the best fit for your health needs. WHY THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE MATTERS Medicare isn’t one-size-fits-all. Everyone’s situation is unique. That’s why choice matters so much. Here are four key reasons: Doctor and Hospital Networks • Medicare Advantage plans use networks of doctors and hospitals. • The lower cost plan may not include your doctor or cover care when you're away from home. Prescription Drug Coverage • Every plan has its own list of covered drugs and preferred pharmacies. • A lower out of pocket cost might not cover the prescriptions you rely on, or could require you to switch pharmacies.

• Your doctors • Your medications • Your costs • Your peace of mind

That's why working with a licensed insurance agent makes such a difference: • We look at your whole situation. Health conditions, prescriptions, doctors, and lifestyle all matter. • We review many plans side by side. Not just the cheapest option. • We explain the fine print. Networks, copays, and deductibles without the jargon. • We put your interests first. The

If this bill progresses, we’ll keep you posted. Until then, remember:

• Medicare is personal. • You deserve the freedom to choose. • We’re here to guide you every step of the way. NEED HELP? Have questions about Medicare or your current coverage? right plan is the one that best fits your needs, not just your wallet.

WHAT YOU CAN DO Here’s how to protect yourself if laws like this move forward: 1. Stay Informed. We’ll continue to update you on Medicare changes. 2. Ask Questions. If something sounds confusing, don’t hesitate to reach out.

The sandy beaches of the Southeast are irresistible to many fall travelers, including a growing number of older adults. And more seniors are planning to travel to hurricane-prone areas this year. According to AARP's annual travel survey, some 70% of adults ages 50 and over say they are planning a 2025 trip, compared with 65% in 2024. Top destinations of choice include Florida, Latin America, and the Caribbean — areas where 13–19 named storms are predicted for the hurricane season ending Nov. 30. Older adults often face greater safety risks during harsh weather because of their reduced mobility and increased health care needs. If you are venturing into storm-prone areas this fall, here are a few strategies for staying safe. • Take stock of the risks at your vacation destination, including exposure to storm surges, high winds, heavy rainfall, or flooding. While most people think of ocean shores as the most vulnerable, inland areas can be hit by flooding, too. As a precaution, check local government websites for maps of evacuation routes and possible shelters. • If you stay at a resort or hotel, don’t assume the staff will care for your needs during a storm. Keep items you might need in an emergency on hand, including extra medications, a paper list of local contacts, and backup chargers for medical devices and phones. Prepare a survival kit with bottled water, food, toiletries, flashlights, and extra batteries. If you must evacuate, carry cash and your ID, such as a passport and driver’s license. • Consider buying evacuation, weather, or traditional travel insurance to guard against weather-related costs or expenses. Read the fine print on these policies before you buy; they vary widely in what they cover and the terms of that coverage. Finally, don’t assume that because you rode out a hurricane in the past, you can do so again. Every storm is unique. Follow orders from safety officials in your location. Don’t try to walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters. Instead, as the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) warns, run from the water and hide from the wind! Chances are good that you will never need to implement any of these tips. But knowing you are prepared can give you peace of mind throughout the storm season!
