Not Your Average Cup of Joe Bridgeport’s Koin Coffee Roasters specializes in roasted beans full of unique flavors. koin coffee roasters’ coffee beans are so popular , they’re hard to keep in stock. Customers especially love the Costa Rica Termico beans. Processed using the termico method, these raw coffee cherries are placed in a large vat, sealed off from oxygen, and heated slightly before the cherry and bean are separated, explains owner Jonathan Gladysz, resulting in a sweet and soft coffee with hints of grape and cinnamon once it’s roasted. “I love it when we give someone a coffee that we roasted and they’re just blown away and say, ’I didn’t know coffee could taste like this,’” Gladysz says. A native West Virginian, Gladysz wasn’t used to coffee growing up, and, like many students, started drinking coffee in college.

After college, his passion for quality coffee only intensified, and Koin Coffee Roasters was born. “When I was in college in Missouri, on every street corner there were these specialty coffee shops, and it was all foreign to me,” he says. “I moved back to West Virginia after college, but I was still hankering for that kind of coffee and was struggling to find it here, so I started roasting coffee on my own at home. That escalated and, next thing you know, I’m buying a commercial drum roaster. I said, ’If I’m going to get this involved, I probably should try to make money off it.’” In addition to serving up brewed cups of joe at a small coffee bar in Bridgeport, Gladysz has added sales of roasted beans through an online shop. Koin Coffee Roasters’ beans are also available in other coffee shops and bars throughout the state. Next time you’re in

Bridgeport, grab a bag of Koin’s Costa Rican beans roasted with passion and experience, or let Gladysz make you a cup and

experience what coffee was meant to taste like. @koincoffee on FB written by amanda larch photographed by carla witt ford
