AXLES

61

Any axle found with cracks should not be repaired, but replaced immediately. Repair welding can be detrimental to the structural integrity of the axle beam, where the benefit of the original tube heat treatment may be nullified by welding. An axle shaft weakened by welding could fail and cause an accident, which could result in serious injury or death.

Never bend the axle, by any means, in order to correct any alignment condition. This could weaken the axle and cause axle failure which could result in serious injury or death.

AXLE TROUBLESHOOTING

PROBLEM Water Contaminated/ Milky Oil

POSSIBLE SOURCES OR CAUSES High pressure washing, flooded loading docks. Severe off-road conditions/operation.

Bulged/Melted Windows

Check for low lube level, high heat caused from improperly adjusted bearings, high heat cause from improperly adjusted brakes.

Leaking Gaskets

Improper torque of flange bolts, gouged mounting surface (hub cap flange/hub face), no gasket, reuse of gasket.

Leakage from Red Fill Plug

Make sure the oil level is not in an overfilled condition, and check the vent hole to make certain it is not plugged. High heat and resulting pressure may also contribute to leakage.

Improperly adjusted bearings or wheel end problems.
