6. Sell your product to a school, crèche etc . – You can sell this to them as a way to raise funds for them. For this to work, you need to have a few things in place. a. You need to have a physical product somewhere in the school where it can be seen, as well as a leaflet (even if you print them at home) showing a “photograph” of the finished product, and the price. b. Go for something the kids want (for kids in school) not the parents as kids drive sales more often than parents do. You will need to research and find out what the “hot” item kids want is. c. You need to work out a deal with the school where they make a profit out of the product you are selling, without taking any risk themselves and you will have to handle payment with the parents directly – Schools have enough on their plate without having to chase parents. d. You need to be 100% sure you can produce the product well, as if the school gets a rush of parents complaining that the product is of bad quality etc, will result in you not getting another job from them again. You may also need the buy-in of the school photographer if you want to produce product for them. Also you will have to handle the payment from the parents. The school wants the money not the trouble of getting money from parents. 7. Use agents – go to industrial areas / areas where a lot of people work that go home with the taxi, and make a deal with a select few. You will give them a sample (say of a mug or T-shirt), which they will show around while waiting in the queue to go home. They will take orders and deposits. The deposit must be high enough to cover your costs and still allow for a small profit (in case you never see them again). You will then produce the items, and drop them off (or they must collect from you) and they must then give you the balance of the money at the same time as you handover the product. At that time, they must also give you the next lot of customers photos with deposits. Naturally, you will need to make the price of the finished product, such that the agent can still put a mark-up onto it, or to include R 10.00 commission per item for the agent. It is critical that if you use agents, that you do not miss the scheduled collection and delivery dates, as this can negatively impact the success of this type of operation.
