Staff & Staff Remuneration You should at some point get someone to help you with production so that you can spend more time selling and as you business grows you may need a delivery person and so on. Getting too many people too quickly will sink you but not getting someone to help will result in your business staying small forever. Production helper The temptation is to get a graphic designer and then get them to do your production. While this can work it will drive your costs up higher than they need to be. It’s best to get a youngster who is interested in graphics work but doesn’t have a formal qualification if your graphics skills aren’t great. Alternatively an unskilled person can be taught the skills needed to produce your products (not the graphics designing and printing skills) but merely the pressing. If you can rope in any of your own kids (if you have any) to do the computer work required. Driver If you have the need of a driver, it’s best to either have a small motorcycle or a diesel car for them. A diesel vehicle is most efficient. Stay far away from electric as the repair costs in case of a collision can be extreme. Also reliability seems to be low. An automatic will be a bit heavier on fuel that a manual but in our experience is more reliable. The vehicle must be declared to your insurance as a business vehicle. Social media person A youngster is again best for this again someone without formal skills will be much cheaper but you will have to strictly supervise them until they understand the kind of message you want to put across. Posting on social media can be taxing but also very rewarding in terms of sales. Retaining staff It’s not only about the money. Job titles and appreciation often work better than increasing salaries (especially for younger people). Other perks can include time off, discount on printed product, surprising them with a pie or some fast food on your dime, telling them they can earn commission for any sales they bring your way and so on. An increase in salary is appreciated only until the person’s spending increases to the point where their expenses increase.
