My Favourite Pinehurst Courses A guide to some of America’s best golf in a US Open year
By Derek Duncan
t has been a decade since the US Open was at Pinehurst and much has changed. The 125-year-old North Carolina resort has 10 courses to choose from, including a Tom
Doak design (No 10) opened in April this year. Although Pinehurst is still Pinehurst, a quaint, historic village that’s unlike anywhere else in golf – or even like anything outside its small geographic radius – the overall envi- ronment of the golf, other resorts, lodging and restau- rants is more evolved than it was 10 years ago. What hasn’t changed is the difficulty of selecting what courses to play. Choosing how to divide your rounds in such a target-rich environ- ment can tie visitors in knots. These are my top six choices to help guide where you should be playing. Neigh- bouring Southern Pines is also home to three special courses: Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club, a 1921 Donald Ross design, Pine Needles, which hosted the 2022 US Women’s Open, and Southern Pines, another Ross creation.
