when we receive compliments, even if those compliments are self-generated and not all that well grounded in actual fact. This is also why, in organizational settings, it so often happens that we praise our bosses even when we don’t really like what they are doing all that much. The need for job security leads us to avoid express- ing any sort of critical view when it relates to the people who write our checks. It’s not uncommon for a leader to have a false sense of how much his employees admire him. Another cause for developing a falsely positive sense of oneself is that it feels good. When we feel better about ourselves, we are more likely to demonstrate confidence, which can clearly make us seem more attractive to others. At least we hope it does. This is why men and women, going on a first date, are not going to start out their conver- sations with why they were the cause of the failure of their previous relationships but rather try very hard to present themselves in the most positive manner. As time goes on, though, whether or not you are in charge, it is very import- ant to have a higher sense of self-awareness as people eventually catch on and see us for who we really are, warts and all, and if we insist on maintaining a false and inflated sense of self, this puts a heavy strain on the relationship. In other words, it helps if you are not the last to know if you have been acting like a jerk. To determine whether or not to guide your life by a pur- suit of greater self-awareness, keep in mind that you will likely make that decision intuitively and through a simple and quick determination of cost and benefit. If you think it will help you to be more self-aware, you will pursue it. If you think it will either make you feel lousy about yourself or get in the way of how you want others to perceive you, you will probably not put as much effort into that pursuit. Asking those who know you well and who you trust like you to give you honest feedback about yourself is helpful. Trusting that you can handle looking into yourself without giving in to your insecurities will also help. We spend more time thinking about ourselves than we do anyone else but that doesn’t mean we will ever figure out who we are. If you are interested in developing your capabilities to a deeper degree, it will be essential that you spend some time questioning both the “why” and the “what” of your current and past behaviors and actions. If you are simply looking to maintain a comfortable existence, you may not want to put yourself through the process with all that much vigor. If you choose the path towards deeper self-awareness, my recommendation would be to follow a recipe that in- cludes two parts listening to the people around you for every part of self-consideration. At the very least, that way you will be less likely to come across as a self-obsessed and annoying bore. People like others to notice them, es- pecially when they have done something well – maybe not so much when they don’t perform up to standard. So,
