To the Person Who Has Shown Me the Way

With the celebration of Mother’s Day, I want to dedicate this space to my wife, Kathy, who is an incredible mother to our children. I deeply appreciate everything she has provided for our family. There is no one who exemplifies motherhood better than Kathy. Somehow, our children are young adults — Danielle turned 22 last month, and Greg is soon to be 24. I’m really proud of our kids, who they are, and what they stand for, and I like to think their integrity is partly due to the foundations we’ve instilled in them. I don’t take for granted having children we can boast about, and it’s no accident. Kathy has put a lot of care and thought into making our children’s lives better and setting them up for success from day one. Kathy serves as a positive role model and guiding light for our children. She’s achieved a lot in her life, from seeking education and professional development to running multiple marathons, including nine Bostons. She’s shown Danielle and Greg how to have good character and displayed the importance of family values though her example. She’s taught our children how to build strong, meaningful relationships in their lives. These aren’t qualities we always think of as we go through our day, but they’re the traits Kathy has nurtured over time. Kathy is always tuned in as we try to do the best for our kids in a way that improves their lives.

A quote comes to mind when I think about our parenting journey: “We’re not raising children; we’re raising future adults.” When you become a parent, you create your ideals and philosophy of parenting, and you do your best to educate yourself in the process. It’s easy to focus on having high-achieving, well-behaved children. But one of the dimensions Kathy brings to our parenting is looking beyond the day-to-day gold stars and winning runs to the future. She considers how each lesson we impart and decision we make will be applied to our children’s realities as adults. This ability to look at the big picture is one of the many qualities that make her a great mom. In addition to being a role model for our children, Kathy has helped guide me to be a loving, nurturing parent. She’s shown me how to be the best father to our kids, and I am so grateful for her guidance. In our parenting journey, Kathy has helped me identify beneficial times to use our disciplinary guardrails as well as the moments to let them down. So, Kathy, this is dedicated to you. I’m so proud of our family. I’m honored to be part of what we’ve built together. You are my example of what a loving, caring, and unconditionally loving mother is. The results of your care are evident, especially in the legacy Danielle and Greg carry into the lives they’re building based on values we’ve shown them.

To all of the mothers out there, Happy Mother’s Day,

-Dr. Nagy

A study conducted by the University of Adelaide recently found that orthodontic care has no direct impact on a person’s long-term dental health. In other words, just because you had braces or some other form of orthodontic treatment does not mean you can be lax about dental hygiene or regular checkups and still avoid tooth decay. Braces may leave your smile looking picturesque, but the fight for healthy teeth is fought daily. Here are a few tips for practicing proper oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Aim the brush at an angle to reach the area where the teeth and gums connect. Brush with short, back-and-forth strokes across the front, back, and chewing surfaces of each tooth. Brushes with soft bristles that can get between your molars are ideal. You should try to replace your toothbrush every 3–4 months or whenever the bristles start to fray. Store your toothbrush in a dry place where it can remain upright until your next use. When you floss, use about 18 inches of dental floss and wrap the ends around each of your middle fingers. Pinch the remaining string between your pointer fingers and thumbs. Run the floss back and forth and up and down between two teeth at a time and be gentle around your gums. Use a different part of the floss every couple of teeth to avoid spreading bacteria. In addition to proper brushing and flossing techniques, there are other ways you can protect your teeth. Adding mouthwash to your plaque-fighting arsenal can remove more hard-to-reach bacteria. You should also try to avoid snacking (without brushing after) before going to bed since this will give bacteria time to feed and multiply overnight. Avoid all tobacco products and, of course, remember to schedule a dental cleaning and exam twice a year. Brushing Up on Dental Care Tips for Better Oral Hygiene

Shelley Brings Compassion to Our Office And the Community As our financial coordinator, Shelley is a direct link to our patients, helping with front desk support, patient care, treatment planning, and working with insurance to see that patients are taken care of. “I run around like a mad woman to keep the office afloat,” Shelley jokes. Truly, though, her role is crucial to helping our patients overcome any barrier to dental treatment, so they can achieve the oral health they deserve. “I love it,” Shelley says of her job. “I love the variety that Dr. Nagy offers, with implants, sedation surgery, and the cosmetic end of things, from treating kids to adults.” Shelley has worked in the dental field for 22 years and says she was specific about what she was looking for in this phase of her career. It was Nagy Family Dental Group’s commitment to community that made us the right fit. “Dr. Nagy is everywhere in the community — you see his name everywhere. His involvement in the community is something I stand behind and something that brought me here,” Shelley says. “I admire him so much for what he does. He’s very ambitious, and I try to keep up,” she says with a laugh. For all her humility, Shelley is highly active in the community. She is an advocate and mentor for teens and for suicide prevention. It’s something she speaks about from the heart. Five years ago, Shelley lost her son to suicide. As unimaginable as the situation is, Shelley has found a way to help others because of what she’s gone through. “All I can do is take the worst situation and turn it into a way to help others,” she says. She knows the importance of getting people talking about this often-taboo topic; it’s the only way to prevent it. Where would you find Shelley outside of work and volunteering in the community? Most likely at the gym. Shelley is a devoted CrossFitter, a healthy habit she picked up about a year and a half ago. “I really got into it, and I absolutely love it,” Shelley says. “That’s my decompression.”

A lot of this might seem like common sense, but not everyone knows best practices when it comes to keeping your teeth healthy.

We are so blessed to have this compassionate, caring team member at Nagy Family Dental Group. Thank you for all you do Shelley — for our patients and for our community!

Warning Signs You’re Losing Shut-Eye to Sleep Apnea You routinely catch yourself dozing off in the afternoon, and your partner constantly complains about your snoring. Despite going to bed early, you feel like you just aren’t sleeping well at night, even though you can’t remember tossing or turning. If any of this sounds familiar, you may be suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. WHAT IS OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA? Characterized by loud and frequent snoring, obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the tongue and soft palate collapse onto the back of the throat, blocking the upper airway. This can cause you to stop breathing up to hundreds of times a night for anywhere from a few seconds to more than a minute. If left untreated, obstructive sleep apnea is a potentially life- threatening disease that can increase your risk for serious health problems. WHO HAS SLEEP APNEA? Obstructive sleep apnea is a common problem that can affect people of any age and body type. The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine reports that at least 25 million adults in the United States suffer from sleep apnea. Although sleep apnea can occur at any age, the risk increases as you get older. HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE SLEEP APNEA? Perhaps the most important question to ask yourself is, are you getting a good night’s sleep? If not, try recording yourself sleeping or ask your bed partner to listen while you sleep. Pay attention to the following warning signs.

LISTEN FOR: •

Loud, frequent snoring.

• Breathing pauses. By definition, sleep apnea involves repeated breathing pauses throughout the night. Your bed partner may hear you gasp for breath or wait to hear you take your next breath. WATCH FOR: • Excessive daytime sleepiness or the ability to fall asleep anywhere, at any time. • Memory problems. • Irritability or moodiness. • Decreased sex drive or impotence. • Morning headaches. • Acid reflux symptoms such as indigestion and heartburn or chest pain. If you think you may have sleep apnea, don’t worry — we can help. Dr. Nagy and the team at Nagy Family Dental Group can answer your questions about obstructive sleep apnea, including the process for diagnosis and treatment options. The first step is for you to be diagnosed by a physician, and we can refer you to a great sleep doctor to get you started.
