Pai Village is based on my first perspective of Pai, Thailand. Sit- ting on my son’s balcony after days of travel, still with my head in the clouds, I was surrounded by a mango forest, banana trees, and a rice field hemmed in by moun- tains. Pai is a valley located at 764 curves up in the hills in the north outside of Chang Mai. Many young people gravitate to this lo- cation for cheap living, great mu- sic, and friendships. My son lived there for a few years.
While I was drawing, someone pointed out the gigantic white Budda on the hill. You can see the white spot in the photo. Lat- er that day, I discovered the music scene downtown and captured the band Bamboo Tambourine, with Osamu Sakurai on guitar and Al- ice Alouette on accordion. Merg- ing these two drawings, I devised a Chagall-inspired piece called Pai Village.
