Herbert Jeffrey Hancock is an American jazz mu- sician, bandleader, and composer. Born in Chicago in 1940, Herbie was a child piano prodigy who per- formed a Mozart piano concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at age 11. He joined the Miles Davis Quintet, where he helped to redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section and was one of the primary architects of the post-bop sound.
