An Evening of Rhythm is a live drawing I did at my son Jaime’s club in Boulder, Colorado. It is a prime example of my mature live sketching style. I used a needlepoint Pilot Precise pen and watercolor paper with a rough finish. The Pilot pen is the most precise and fastest I have ever encountered. I start drawing as soon as the music begins and stop when it is finished. The finished work captures the excitement and spontaneity of a live performance.
You can feel the rhythm in my live music sket- ches. I use cubist techniques to break down the figures into geometric shapes, sometimes adding a third arm or a second head. I never know ahead of time what appears. My work ta- kes an immediate and abstract approach. I use the music to set up the patterns, creating a sen- se of movement and energy. Look carefully at the fine lines. They show you how I feel about the figures before I lock them in the drawing. I work from lines to shapes. As I dial in the final drawing, I turn all the pri- mary lines into shapes. I have been working on refining this technique for years.
