2018 2021 Shoosty V2 Catalog Raisonné

2021

Once I learned about the white buffalo, I tried to find one. I found one stuffed in a museum and later found it as a huge sculp- ture. My mission finally led me to Niagra Falls, where I had an epiphany: the falls are the white buffalos of the ancient myth. After studying the drawings and paintings on pages 434-441, you can decide. I would be amiss if I didn’t mention Shoosty Bugs. I was encouraged to make more bugs by Jennifer McInnes Coolidge, curator. This project turned into a book written by Jim Boring, a very gifted writ- er. I told him I couldn’t be the author of a Holocaust book and a book on bugs unless the bugs have gravity. He wrote a master- ful foreward extolling the importance of whimsey. (516-517) There were plenty of live music drawings, too. One piece ended up being the album cover for my friend, Jorge Garcia. They keep getting more sophisticated. Veedauwoo, Wyoming - I love this location for its accessibility to giant boulders. It has all of the elements I look for when drawing: color; scale; mythology; and dynamic ele- ments. I made a vector painting and with the help of a friend on Facebook from Ja- pan, we added his poem to the piece. It is called, Imagine.

Winter’s Jazz Club The Eric Jacobson Quintet Playing the music of Horace Silver. Sophisticated Hippy, Chicago 2021

ARTIST STATEMENT In 2021, I was retired for almost two years. I was free. My oldest son, Jason, and his fiancee, Anna, drove my van to California and Colorado. I met them there. Anna flew home, and we took the van to North Da- kota through Wyoming, Nebraska, and South Dakota, then east to New York City through the jazz capitol of Chicago. On the way, I found an American Indian bookstore in Rapid City, South Dakota. Here, I discovered some American Indian myths, including the one about the white buffalo. It is central to the Lakota creation story.
