Scotts Bluff, Nebraska After driving through what seemed to be 1,000 miles of grasslands, with not a single tree as far as the eye can see, seeing the hills of Scotts Bluff, was a welcome change. Mammoth Museum, Hot Springs, South Dakota About 40 mammoth skeletons were discovered and put under a roof turning it into a working site that was out of the cold and rain making it a museum. It was exciting to watch the archeolo- gists at work. I got a great drawing of one of them using a tiny tool to extract the giant mammoths. Rapid City, South Dakota We discovered an indian bookstore in Rapid City, South Dakota, with an extensive collection of American Indian books. It was here that I learned about the story of the White Buffalo, the creator of the world. I was so enamored with the story that it set the stage for the rest of the trip. The Badlands of North Dakota They are called the badlands because it would be impossible for covered wagons to navigate across this topography. We drove to the nearby lookout area and saw expansive area where horizontal striations in the rocks change colors depending on the light, they are alson known as the painted rocks. It inspired me to make a major piece of art I called, American Dreamer , based on a similar major work by Henri Rousseau, called, Sleeping Gypsy .
Chicago Jazz Clubs Live music three nights in a row. Fantastic! Three different styles of music. I made lots of live drawings. I start drawing when the band starts and stop when they stop. Those drawings are full of exciting motion, and odd shapes. Brooklyn, New York On the Fourth of July we met up with our family. We went to The Blue Note a famous Jazz Club in SoHo. About a week later we switched van peo- ple. My son, Jason, left and my daughter, Carly, stepped on. Sand Beach, Arcadia National Park, Maine Sand Beach is a boulder-strewn beach. I do not recall any sand. I made two watercolors while sitting there pondering the rough waves as they struck the granite. Tavolino’s Restaurant, Coral Springs - We lis- tened to Jorge Garcia play his new album, Ded- icated to You. The title is a nod to Jesus who in- spired him. I made a few great drawings of Jorge playing music. I imagined Jesus opening Jorge’s head and giving him direct inspiration. Now it’s the cover of his newest album.
