PORTRAITS
Dorothy Shooster, my mom. She is 98 as of this writing. She was born in 1925 in Philadelphia. She grew up in the Strawberry Mansion section of the city in squalor. Her parents were first-generation immigrants from Russia (current day Ukraine). His father was a metal worker and a business- man. He sold radios, among other things. Her mother was well-educated as a teacher in Russia, which was no easy feat since the family is Jewish and women are discouraged from going to school in the old country with its backward ways.
My mom had three siblings, two brothers, and a sister. Her sister was a famous fashion design- er under the name Albert Nipon. My mom was married to Herman Shooster for many years and had four kids. Herman built a small business into one large enough for all his kids to make a living. At one point, nine family members worked there.
