Under the Parsonage Roof by Althea S. Miller I ’ m t h e fir s t o n e o n m y k n e e s . C’mon, kids. It’s prayer time.” Althea was standing by her bed as she challenged a younger brother and sister to get to their knees first. “Ardyth beat you,” Mark chanted as he joined the group with a bang. “ I’m second. Get down, Althea. I want to pray and get to bed.” Instinc tively Mother felt his forehead. Who ever heard of a well child saying he wants to go to bed? “ ’Stead of me praying first, I’ll let you be first. Then Ardyth, and I’ll be last.” “ Thanks, Mark. Dear Father, thank Thee for a very happy day. Help us not to sin, for when we do it hurts others and Thee. Sin is ugly. I don’t want to be ugly with sin.” Mother knew her nine year old was acutely aware of her sin of stubborn ness that very afternoon. “ Dear Lord, as Althea said ‘Don’t let us sin,’ I say it too. Of course we can’t be perfect all of the time. Not even some of the time. But help us to be good and obedient to Mama. Thank Thee for a wonderful day. I’m so glad Jesus came to earth to save us.” Ardyth’s childlike philosophy re garding sin and the possibilities of p e r f e c t i o n i n t h e Christian life reminded Mother of the spiritual growth of her seven year old. “ 0 God, (Mark’s first use of that term in addressing God in prayer) bless that nothing happens to my army trucks I got for Christmas last year. May the Lord bless my Mother’s back that it gets better. Give her everything she needs. (Pause). O Lord, give her everything she wants. For Jesus sake.” “Mark, it probably wouldn’t be good for Mommie to have everything she wants, do you think?” “ I guess not,” the little fellow con ceded. “Why?” Mother asked. “ Because we don’t know what is best for us most of the time. What we ask for may not be pleasing to the Lord nor for our good. You taught us a long time ago to pray for God’s will and way in our lives even if it is not what we want.” Althea had learned this lesson well. Mother experienced a new spring in her step and lilt in her heart as she tucked her “ heritage of the Lord” into bed. A song burst spontaneously from her lips. “ Singing I go along life’s road, Praising the Lord, praising the Lord . . .”
