It’s as simple as that. Sure, there are signs of Spring time like green grass to mow, blooming crocuses, blooming daffodils, blooming tulips, budding trees, worms on sidewalks and driveways, fat Robin’s, windy days, rainy days, golf courses opening, and pot holes on the road ways. But, nothing is more important to me than opening day for Major League Baseball. I truly enjoy baseball at all levels of play, including high school, college, and youth, but still nothing compares to the excitement of starting a season with a “clean slate” for my beloved Boston Red Sox. And I know for sure that all The Cubs fans can truly relate to me. As this column appears for publication in the July/August/September issue of the Crest Ink summer is with us and Spring time is long gone. I apologize to you readers for being a bit tardy with my thoughts, as I actually write this on March 31st. And the thoughts remain true each and every Spring time so think of Spring 2017. Spring time reflects a fresh start for nature and vegetation of all types. The weather begins to get better with warm- er temperatures and the days get longer and longer. Baseball takes advantage of these things and starts anew. Ev- ery MLB team has renewed hope and begins the season with the same 0-0 record and chance for a successful sea- son. Baseball fans always see hope in their team with new player acquisitions, young players stepping up, and older players having one more solid season left. Of course, part of the excitement in MLB is the unknown and the sur- prises that often occur. What we see on paper as far as statistics must be translated onto the baseball field with actual events and results. It is so much fun to speculate with other avid baseball fans about the prospects of success for teams and make predictions. It is fun to have friendly debates and justify why one believes in certain outcomes. Of course, there are always a lot of “ifs” to happen to make our desired outcomes. IF the Red Sox get very good starting pitching this year, IF the hitting is what it should be with the players they have, and IF their defense is solid, then the Red Sox will win their division. Yes, some major “ifs”. It’s a long 162 game schedule and this allows the best teams to separate themselves at the end of the season. Let’s see, I’m sensing that the World Series (to me a sure sign of Fall) this year will pit The Red Sox and The Cubs. Do I have any agreement? Since I’m a bit biased I won’t bother to say who wins the series in 7 games! Baseball Synonymous with Spring Time by Al Duthie
