IT CHR ISTMAS

W H A T MAKES

by George Baker Chino State Prison, Chino, Calif.

What makes it Christmas? They say—many things: Snow, and gifts, and mistletoe— Santa, or a choir that sings. I know what makes it Christmas, At least, what it is to me. And it isn’t snow, or mistletoe

Or even a Christmas tree. And it’s not the presents Big or small; Or the cards we hang On the living room wall. Nor the bells nor balls, Or ribbons or bows; Not the cake or candy—

And heaven knows— How much there is Of all of this— No, not even a warm, tender mistletoe kiss. What makes it Christmas? A Little Child, born to die. He died so we might live. This was our present from Christ, the Lord. Now tell me, what do YOU have to give??? "For Unto Us A Child Is Born" When star-tipped firs with tinselled boughs Reflect the Yule log’s flame, When wreaths and bells and carols gay The Christ Child’s birth proclaim. We give the things of lesser worth, We sing light hearted, free, Forgetful that our Saviour-King Gave all for you and me. How few there are who hang the wreath, How few who deck the tree W ill look beyond the Manger Child To blood-stained Calvary. Dear Lord, may we with grateful hearts Give out this Christmastide God’s Great Good News — “ Redeemed from Sin By Christ the Crucified.” M ay we in joyous anthems raise Our voice in adoration, praise To Him Who paid that we go free, Secure w ith Him eternally. —Grace Conklin Lofton Let’s take a look! This is Christmas As it’s in my book.
