K ohler is committed to sustainability and is always searching for ways to avoid wasting something good that can be used to create something beau- tiful. It turns out that this ethos holds true even when it comes to color. After the overwhelmingly positive response to the release of Kohler Heritage Colors collection, the company has continued to revive vivid shades from its past to showcase on their latest products. Recent additions include a verdant selection of Heritage Greens such as Fresh Green, Aspen Green, and Teal. To spread awareness, Kohler partnered with Flamingo Estate, which is both a chris- matic property in the hills of Los Angeles and a luxury lifestyle brand producing soap, honey and olive oil, some harvested directly from the property. “Flamingo Estate is my home and garden, but it’s more than that. It’s a philosophy,” explains owner Richard Christiansen. He notes that, like Kohler, they value quality, time, texture and attention to detail. The result- ing collaboration is called “From Green, Beauty Blooms” and includes photos and video of Kohler Heritage Green products interspersed among the property’s splendid plant life. This emphasizes the value of creating a sense of well-being and connection to nature—whether in the great outdoors or within the walls of your home. Visit kohler.com to see more. ■

W e combed Shea McGee’s book The Art of Home (Harper Horizon) for advice to help shape our next renovation. For open space in the bath, McGee suggests small pieces of freestanding fur- niture to lend character. This will also complement beautiful Kohler x Studio McGee pieces such as Castia bathroom fau- cets and lighting options such as Embra or Kernen sconces. Want to shake up storage? McGee recommends unexpect- ed hardware choices—swapping in a few horizontal pulls on a piece otherwise outfitted with knobs. This can freshen older pieces or add a twist to something new from the beautiful Malin collection. Or opt for a piece like the Seagrove vanity with its singular, inset hardware. In the kitchen, McGee says mixing countertop thicknesses lends a designer look—as would incorporating Edalyn kitchen faucets. Guests tend to gather at the store’s kitchen island—just like people coming home.
O ne of the most wel- come arrivals in Summit, NJ, of late has been a new Kohler Signature Store (KSS). Designer Judy Rogoff, who is also a manager at the store, calls Summit charming—with great restaurants and shopping that complement the offerings of KSS. “People familiar with downtown Summit are blown away by the elegance and beauty of the new store,” Rogoff says. “There was sig- nificant remodeling—both inside and outside—that completely changed the store and added incredible street pres- ence. The hard work on the renovation really paid off with an amazing flow and high-end customer experience.” Rogoff notes that customers ap- preciate how helpful the layout is in navigating Kohler’s innovative fixtures. “The faucets are lined up on one wall
for easy comparison,” she says. “There are bathroom vignettes situated across from the faucets. Then, there is a row of our high-end smart toilets— with their auto-opening feature—along the back wall.” She says customers gravitate toward special displays in- cluding a section from the superstars of Studio McGee and a working shower that shows off the latest in sprays and smart technology. Rogoff notes an- other part that seems to have its own special pull. “Just like coming home: people congregate around our large kitchen island!” The launch was accompanied by a grand opening event hosted by General Plumbing Supply President Justin Freedman and David Kohler, Chair and CEO of Kohler Co. “David Kohler was incredibly nice, and it was a thrill to have him be part of our celebration,” Rogoff shares. “We rolled out the red

carpet for our guests with live music and presentations,” she adds. “We all had a great time celebrating the open- ing of the store and what lies ahead for us.” Rogoff praises her dedicated team and says they love serving the KSS Summit clientele. “Customers are keenly aware of how integrated Summit is with the design space,” she says. “We think our showroom will be a wonderful addition to next year’s Summit Design Week.” Until then, Rogoff encourages everyone to come experience it for themselves. “We hope to see you all at the KSS Summit Showroom soon,” she says. “We are open 7 days a week!” ■

MEET THE DESIGNERS
How would you describe your personal design style? Transitional casual. Who or what inspires you?
If you were a color, what color would you be and why? Red because it’s an energizing color that is bold and powerful but at the same time warm and welcoming. How do you unwind when you’re feeling stressed out? I take a walk. This calms my nerves and enables me to think. Also, spending time with friends and family. Is there a design upgrade you’d love to make in your own home? I definitely need to upgrade my storage! Can you share a trend or something you’ve seen in the world of design that fascinates you? I am very fascinated by the design trend of LED lights. It’s so cool how they can be integrated into design concepts and how their colors can be changed. They create such a cool mood! What do you hope clients have thought about when you begin work- ing with them? The vision that they desire for their home renovation. Is there an iconic building or space
I am inspired by love. I love people, mu- sic, animals, food. Most importantly, I love what I do and I want clients to love the outcome of their design choices. Is there a TV show or movie with de- sign that you love? What do you love about it? Million Dollar Listing —viewing the inside of mega-mansions—and TV shows about house flipping. I love how an old house can be modernized and then be sold for a profit. Can you share a problem you encoun- tered on a design project and how you made it work? In the case of a problematic budget, I was able to accommodate the client by suggesting more affordable collections and materials that were still within their design aesthetic. What type of design project do you find yourself working on most? I find myself working on bathroom remodels the most. My clients come in and I spend time with them to make sure they choose what best fits their style.
ELI MUÑIZ PARAMUS
The penthouse of the iconic 432 Park Ave in NYC, one of the tallest apart- ment buildings in the world. Even though I’m afraid of heights, the views should be incredible. Is there a talent or skill that you wish you had? As part owner of Vegan Pastry Lab bakery in Englewood, NJ, I wish I had better pastry-making skills to assist my kitchen staff when I’m not at Kohler. Do you find yourself drawn to working with autumnal colors— those leaf-turning reds, golds, and earth tones? Yes, absolutely. They definitely set the vibe for the fall season—and I love dressing the part.

HOW DID 23 DESIGN
TEAMS BRING FRESH COLOR TO PALM SPRINGS? W hen announc- ing the Seventh Annual Kips Bay Decorator Show House Palm Beach 2024, Board Presi- dent James Druckman dubbed it “one of our most unique homes to date.” While we can’t speak to the previous state of the 8,500-square- foot home—complete with five bedrooms and a 4,500-square-foot roof terrace, we can attest that the results were, indeed, unique. Of course, that was after two dozen teams of designers, archi- tects, and other pros descended on 230 Miramar Way in West Palm Beach with a rainbow of color. You can see it in the red of the pattern-packed bath from Megan Gorelick, the gold of a lounge by Sara Story, the green behind Betsy Wentz’s wild wet bar, and the blue of Jim Dove’s bold kitchen. But whether they walked away preferring the demure beiges of Jessica Jubelirer or the fabulous white-tent folly that rose above Allan Reyes’ rooftop scene, thou- sands of visitors had at least one thing in common: They turned their love of design into needed support for Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club and Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County. Read on to see some of our favorite spaces. With Kohler fixtures throughout, this primary bath feels both beautiful and serene.
HOME MADE DESIGN TO WELCOME BACK EVERYONE.
T E X T PAUL HAGEN
A fter the Civil War, a stretch of the Pennsylvania Railroad leading west from Philadelphia creat- ed an area of substantial suburban expansion that became known as the Main Line. Recent- ly, a beautiful home there became the place where a bicoastal couple chose to shape a space where they could blend their families. Thus, part of the challenge presented to designer Michele Plachter was to embrace the couple’s passion for entertaining and comfortably accom- modate six grown children whenever it is time for a home- coming. The resulting project balances grand gestures and intimate touches to make room for all. But even a home designed with mixing and mingling in mind still requires a sanctuary for the homeowners. Plach- ter provided that by making their primary bath (pictured
above) a serene retreat. “We embraced a zen vibe, choos- ing a clean, modern vanity in white oak,” she says. “Kohler faucets and plumbing fixtures add a modern, yet glamor- ous, touch.” She calls the space chic and utterly calming. ”We wanted the seamless, neutral, and modern vibe of the bathroom to flow naturally into the primary bedroom, creating a space that is as gorgeous as it is cohesive,” she adds. “The oversize chandelier creates the drama in a very sophisticated way.” For visitors, the home begins making an impression with its French château-inspired exterior. “Our goal was to honor the timeless architecture of the home while reimagining the interior with a fresh perspective that both respects and ele- vates its classic beauty,” says Plachter. She views the entry- way as a vital introduction. “We wanted to set the tone with

Plachter aimed to give each gathering area its own energy. She calls the solarium (above and below) the “ultimate party room,” and thus she shaped its design to be bright, grand and anchored by a bar that invites celebration.
a palette that includes a subtle metallic-patterned wallpaper,” she says. Upon entering, one need only look up to the soaring ceilings to appreciate how the home’s architecture inherently creates drama throughout the space. Plachter and her team worked to make sure that each of the house’s gathering spaces had a distinct energy. The den—with its low ceilings and wood beams—offers a cozy ambience for movie night. A spiral staircase leads the way to an intimate wine cellar. The living room has a feeling of impres- sive formality, while the solarium cues guests to let loose with inviting seating vignettes and a bar worth toasting. Eating areas are also imbued with identity: moody glamor in the dining room con- trasts the sunny casualness of the kitchen. Inventive solutions were required to make sure everyone could book passage to dreamland. This included creating a double-bunk bedroom and add- ing a bedroom in the basement. But Plachter saved some love for the home’s more diminutive areas as well. “We believe powder rooms and smaller spac- es are perfect for taking design risks and creating memorable moments,” she says. She aimed to connect the powder room visually to the rest of the house with a daring teal-wood veneer wallcovering. And she chose a high-gloss vanity to reflect light, enhance the room’s darker tones, and add glamor. The clients were thrilled by the outcome. “The overall feel is gracious and glamorous—a perfect

blend of spaces where grown kids can relax—with an entire hangout lounge and bedrooms in the basement—and guests can feel truly welcomed,” Plachter says. “The flow of the home makes it an entertainer’s dream, with the grand solarium opening to a stunning pool and outdoor kitchen, effortlessly extending the party from day into night.” The Michele Plachter Design team also found the project immensely rewarding. “We were thrilled to transform this mag- nificent estate—infusing it with a fresh, modern touch while elevating its decor,” she explains. “The clients wanted bold and luxurious, and we fully embraced that vision. While functionality is always at the forefront of our de- signs, it’s incredibly exciting when clients are eager to push the boundaries of design—and that’s exactly what we did here.” But Plachter is quick to note that her team’s satisfaction does not derive from creating some- thing that reflects their own tastes. ”Our philosophy is always to deeply understand our clients’ lifestyles, wishes and dreams, then bring that vision to life in a way that goes beyond expecta- tions,” she says. “This project is a perfect reflection of that.” ■
