Recommended Projects The future roadway network for the 2035 CTP includes approximately 158 miles of roadways. This network includes recommendations in five major categories, including new lanes, new roadways, intersection improvements, modernizations, and the addition of raised medians. The recommended roadway improvements for the study area represent an inclusive process that considered many previous planning efforts. The development of recommendations aimed to strategically address the overlap, inconsistencies, or gaps in existing plans and produce a cohesive set of updated recommendations. Recommended roadway projects also consider existing and planned land uses, environmental constraints, projected future travel demand, and public input. There is an existing need within the study area to alleviate PM peak travel pressures from the north to the west and AM peak travel pressures from the south and east. The roadway recommendations in the CTP are working towards this end. However, upcoming growth pressures such as the opening of NC 540 through the study area will have a profound effect on how traffic flows in the study area. Subsequent updates of the CTP will revisit this region in more detail once there is a better understanding of the changes in traffic flows in the area. In other areas, the CTP attempts to identify needs that may emerge as the Town continues to grow. The identification of future east-west core corridors reflects the desire to look into the future and highlight those areas that may need further study as the CTP is updated in years to come. The graphic below details the steps taken to achieve a finalized set of roadway recommendations. The following pages include maps of recommended roadway projects, rights-of-way, and future cross-sections. Additional detail on the projects included in these recommendations can be found in Volume 2: Technical Documentation of the CTP.
