Recommendations The map on the following page identifies priority corridors that will be targeted for enhanced facilities. In general, recommendations identify four main contexts and types of facilities: Proposed Sidepaths Arterial four-lane streets are recommended to be enhanced by sidepaths to create functional multimodal corridors that provide
The Vision
While active transportation demand is increasing across the country, few smaller communities have invested in providing the type of comprehensive networks needed to provide their community with real transportation choices. Fuquay-Varina community leaders recognize the importance of providing safe, separated, and functional bicycle and pedestrian facilities along major transportation corridors, which already connect the community’s major destinations. To ensure bicycle and pedestrian facilities serve people of all ages and abilities in the safest manner, the Town vision includes sidepaths on all thoroughfares of 3 or more lanes outside of Judd Parkway. These corridors tend to serve higher volumes of vehicular traffic with higher speeds, and sidepaths will provide a safer environment for bicyclists and pedestrians alike. Inside Judd Parkway, traffic volumes and speeds are typically lower and bicyclists can more safely traverse in the travel way with vehicles. The Town’s Land Development Ordinance also includes provisions for wider sidewalks in many locations within Judd Parkway to accommodate the larger pedestrian volumes that may occur in the downtown area. By focusing on upgrading existing connections to community activity centers and providing off-street facilities that provide safety and comfort, biking and walking in Fuquay- Varina can become a part of life and real everyday transportation choice.
safe regional connections. These facilities minimize conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles and provide both recreation and utilitarian transport over long distances.
Proposed Sidewalk/Sidepaths Select two-lane arterial and collector streets are recommended to be upgraded with a sidepath on one side of the road and a sidewalk on the other. In this way, the sidewalks provide local connections to the surrounding neighborhoods, while the enhanced sidepaths connect to the overall network.
Proposed Greenways
Rights-of-way along streams in other areas have been reserved for the development of a connected greenway system. These multi-use paths will connect the overall bicycle and pedestrian system and provide recreational opportunities.
Bicycle Boulevards (Sharrows) Bicycle Boulevards are most applicable to local streets with low volumes and speeds. Bicycle boulevards also provide a great opportunity for areas with
constrained rights-of-way, such as facilities within Judd Parkway. In addition to bicycle boulevards, sidewalks for pedestrian use should be considered on all roads within Town.
Existing Sidewalks The Town of Fuquay-Varina maintains a comprehensive sidewalk network throughout downtown and into the surrounding neighborhoods. Where these overlap with recommendations, the expectation is that these sidewalks will be upgraded to an enhanced facility. over time as opportunity projects develop.
