support to national and regional freight movement. In the Town, this applies to those roads within the National Highway System (NHS), which includes US 401 and NC 55 north of US 401, as well as railway-highway grade crossing or grade separation projects. Recommendations While US 401 is the only designated truck route within Fuquay-Varina, facilities such as NC 55 and NC 42 carry similar truck volumes. In addition to truck routes, Norfolk Southern provides freight and cargo services within and through the Town. While there are no standalone freight and rail projects in this plan, several recommendations will have a direct impact on freight and rail service within the Town. These projects are in the table below.

Improvement

Benefit

Improvements along the US 401 corridor include widening for additional capacity and median construction for improved access management, traffic flow, and safety.

US 401

NC 55 recommendations include capacity increases through the addition of extra lanes.

NC 55

Improvements along NC 42 serve to benefit both freight and rail. The addition of a median and additional lanes will aid in increased east-west traffic flow. While rail service is not directly impacted, there is an at-grade crossing on NC 42 near downtown. Improvements along this corridor should take careful consideration of incorporating crossing enhancements for both vehicles and pedestrians.
