The Town of Fuquay-Varina has made many significant strides to plan, design, and implement transportation improvements over the years since the previous Community Transportation Plan’s adoption. Moving forward, these efforts can be continued and augmented by considering the following policy or program recommendations. These recommendations include a combination of policy modifications as well as community efforts. Although each community-centered effort is listed separately, they can be implemented concurrently using common resources. Element Policy or Program Recommendation General

Efforts should continue to reconcile and streamline Town ordinances and specifications to implement the 2035 Community Transportation Plan and 2035 Community Vision Land Use Plan Recommendations Update the Land Development Ordinance to require new developments to dedicate ROW and complete partial construction of the Eastern and Western Parkways Update the Land Development Ordinance to require ROW dedication for future improvements along US 401 and NC 55 Support efforts by partner agencies to promote ITS and TDM improvements Where appropriate, consider implementation of access management strategies for both public and private sector improvements Review all development proposals for consistency with the approved collector street plan and emphasize network connectivity rather than specific alignments Integrate future bicycle and pedestrian networks with the 2035 Community Transportation Plan to improve access and enhance connectivity between systems Amend the Collector Street Plan as necessary to include new streets as they are identified during the development review process During road projects, enhance appropriate crossings to include marked crosswalks, pedestrian signal phasing, and ADA-compliant accessibility features Install rapid flashing beacons on all unsignalized greenway trail crossings or directional crossings as appropriate at major thoroughfares Partner with police and schools to implement a biking safety campaign Post informational signage to inform and educate the community about the purpose and rules of a sidepath, greenway, etc. Partner with downtown businesses to offer discounts or special offers to customers on bicycles or on foot Create wayfinding signage that details the trip length to community destinations by bike or on foot to encourage travelers to step outside their vehicle Create a community “bike club” that organizes community rides to teach the rules of the road, and shares safety and enforcement concerns with law enforcement Utilize a team of staff to guide the implementation of the plan’s recommendations including pursuit of grant opportunities, develop future recommendations, and evaluate current facilities Support transit as a feasible alternative mode of transportation at the staff and administrative levels
