Examples of the types of activities that will be considered for appointment or promotion to Associate Professor are provided for guidance; however, it is recognized that faculty in this track must excel in several academic areas, but not necessarily in all of these facets of academic life. Evidence of excellence in research include: 1. The research and the reporting of results must reflect original, independent studies that contribute new knowledge to the field. It is important to document that the candidate has an essential role in the formation and testing of new ideas and hypotheses and/or has made major contributions to interdisciplinary team research. The quality of the research is more important than the quantity. 2. Quality and impact of research are judged by the following: the quality of journals in which the work is published; peer-reviewed, external research support from all sources, but with priority given to national sources (e.g. NIH, DoD); letters from experts within the university; letters solicited from nationally recognized eminent scholars outside the university with expertise in the candidate's field (solicited by the department; more weight is given to letters from individuals who are experts in the field and who are not collaborators or former mentors of the applicant); and presentation of peer-reviewed papers or invited lectures of national or international importance. 3. Independence as a scholar is documented by the candidate's being the first, last or corresponding author on publications, the major creative force in the planning and development of projects, and principal investigator or multiple PI on research grants or contracts. Major contributions to interdisciplinary research are documented by letters from project directors, principal investigators, or others who have first-hand knowledge of the candidate's role in the overall team effort. 4. Evidence of peer recognition for research activities may include serving on study sections, on editorial boards, or as reviewers for granting agencies and high quality journals. 5. Unique or specialized contributions to the research mission of the department or college such as leading and evolving a critical core capability or research program/center or serving as a critical bioinformatics/statistical resource in support of extramural grants. Evidence of excellence in teaching include: 1. Teaching commitments may include lecturing in courses for undergraduate, medical or graduate students; supervising laboratory sections; mentoring residents, postdocs and/or graduate students (e.g., serving as dissertation advisor); service on graduate student qualifying exam/dissertation committees; and/or other instructional experiences.
