maintain outstanding research, extramural funding support, teaching/mentoring, and service on an on-going basis. Research and Scientific Excellence For tenure, there must be evidence that research productivity and scientific recognition will continue through the individual's academic career. A tenure recommendation is based on sustained research productivity as evidenced by several criteria. These include publications, national reputation, and collective extramural funding from both national and other sources. The importance of the candidate's research and national reputation can be judged by publications in high quality journals. The publications should exhibit a focus in a defined area of investigation or expertise and clear evidence of independence as an investigator, and/or valuable and sustained contributions as a member of an interdisciplinary research team. Additional metrics of research accomplishments and impact are invitations to present work at national or international meetings, being asked to organize national meetings and serving as chairs at national or international meetings. Other criteria more commonly associated with advancement to the rank of tenure professor might include national awards, named lectureships, visiting professorships, leadership roles on national review panels, or invited published reviews, book chapters or monographs. The ability to compete for independent research funding is an excellent indication of how the candidate is judged by peers. It is expected that the candidate would be a current principal investigator on one or more substantial peer-reviewed extramural research grants supporting a significant portion of the candidate’s salary and providing sufficient funds to maintain his/her research program. Sustainability of the research program is demonstrated by a continuously funded research program, renewal of federal support and/or acquisition of two or more lines of extramural funding. Significant percent effort on collaborative projects (as a multiple-PI or co-I) is also considered evidence of research accomplishment, particularly in cases were an investigator may be an integral part of multiple grants across the college (e.g. biostatistics, core facilities) with resources from grants amounting to substantial and sustainable salary support for the tenure candidate. In these cases of specialized collaborative expertise, appropriate milestones and expectations should be included in the candidate’s appointment and/or reappointment letters, and documented during annual reviews. Additional evidence of scientific excellence includes the translation of UC intellectual property into commercially viable products. Teaching/Mentoring To be granted tenure, the individual must be a skilled teacher and/or mentor. Demonstrated excellence in teaching, can be judged by substantial commitment to the students, either teaching alone or in conjunction with other faculty members in one or more courses in the medical and/or graduate curriculum. Leadership in organizing, directing, and teaching innovative or new courses is also viewed favorably in tenure decisions.
