HOLIDAY EXCITEMENT

Celebrating a Great Holiday Season!

“We also are all very busy, and we each have some exciting news to share!”

The temperature is dropping rapidly, most trees are trimmed, and stockings are hung. Christmas lights twinkle up and down each street, holiday treats and goodies are baking in the oven, and the stores are full of people checking gifts off their lists. As we welcome the holidays and celebrate with family and friends, we also bid farewell to 2022 and welcome a brand-new year — a clean slate. What did you accomplish or experience over this past year? What goals and aspirations do you have in place for the new year? Are there vacations you’d like to take or sights you’d like to see? Here at Professional Physical Therapy, we are proud of the enormous year we’ve had in opening our second location and expanding, and we have much to be grateful for. We also are all very busy, and we each have some exciting news to share! On my end, I’m thrilled to celebrate my grandbaby’s very first holiday season with my daughter! The “firsts” are exciting, with the outfits, gifts, photos, and experiences to last a lifetime. I still remember my children’s first Christmas, and I’m ready to watch my daughter experience the same joy she gave me. As for the rest of the team, everyone is excited to return to a bit more “normalcy” and experience a bit more socialization and togetherness with family, friends, and loved ones throughout the holidays. Dr. Jill Trovo is proud to announce that she is pregnant and due in January! The entire office could not be more excited to welcome her new little bundle of joy! We recently welcomed Chris Bushell to our Professional PT family as a new PT assistant! A diehard hockey fan, he is passionate about sports and physical therapy and is a fabulous addition to our team! As we have continued to grow and expand, we’ve welcomed a new technician and front desk team members, so be prepared to see some new friendly faces around the office!

As for Chris, our technician in the back, he is not only a technician but also a patient here at the office. After some knee surgery, he will be experiencing Professional PT in a new way as we work to rehabilitate him. Ironically enough, many of us therapists found an interest in physical therapy through being patients ourselves. After an injury or surgery and a positive physical therapy experience, our perspectives on rehabilitation, sports medicine, and recovery were drastically altered. While we were surprised to recover from an injury we thought would never allow us to be pain-free again, we found the practice life-changing and fell in love with the profession. After all, when you’ve been a patient, you understand the process in a new light. Lastly, we are gearing up for the Santa Foundation — a yearly charity that helps us adopt a family in need and supply gifts and necessities for the holiday season. It warms our hearts to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate in our community! From our family to you and yours, we wish you a happy and healthy holiday season! Happy New Year!

Grandma Babs Is Taking TikTok by Storm!

Cooking Up Food for the Soul

Barbara Costello, deemed TikTok’s favorite grandma, has taken the world by storm with her cooking and lifestyle advice on the popular platform. Like most viral TikTok users, Costello “blew up” during the COVID-19 quarantine by showing users how to make easy meals at home and giving advice for making everyday living a little easier. Grandma Babs began her journey in April 2020. Her daughter, Liz Ariola, already had an established TikTok platform when she recruited her mother to start her own account. She was hesitant initially, but Grandma Babs lives by the mantra, “You’re never too old to try something new!” There was a future beyond entertainment, and Babs realized her show could also be used as a teaching tool. Grandma Babs’ first video — demonstrating how to cook a sheet-pan chicken recipe — received more than 130,000 views! The recipes she has collected throughout the decades from family, friends, magazines, and even newspapers have benefited many people. But since her recipe box can’t supply TikTok content forever, she began expanding her repertoire. She has posted many simple life-hack videos along with some wise grandmotherly advice. Grandma Babs’ fanbase ranges between 20–40-year-olds, and fans have found comfort in her presence as many couldn’t see their relatives during the quarantines of the past two years. She continues to use her TikTok platform to help people, but now she is on TV, too — “Good Morning America” and “Access Hollywood.” TikTok has taken Grandma Babs to a celebrity status that has transitioned well from the phone screen to the television screen. Her most popular post to date has been an overnight breakfast casserole that caught the attention of Drew Barrymore, who then invited Costello to her show! So, what’s in store for Grandma Babs? She may be 72 years old, but her trajectory on the popular platform suggests she may host her own cooking show someday! But she’s in no rush and would prefer her career to evolve naturally. She still enjoys her time on TikTok and plans to stay on as long as her content continues to help others.

We have treated Brandy at ProPT over the years, and she is always a pleasure to work with. She always brings great energy and enthusiasm to her rehab as well as a lot of good- fun sarcasm. There are always a few good laughs exchanged throughout the treatment. We wish her all the best in the rest of her current recovery and are pleased to have her as our Patient of the Month!

Stay Active Even in the winter months when it’s much more appealing to cuddle up on the couch and watch your favorite show or get lost in a good book with a cup of tea, it’s essential to keep moving. Even if you just take a walk around your neighborhood, staying active helps your joints remain properly lubricated, keeps your muscles spry, and boosts overall health and fitness.

Combat Those Extra Winter Pounds The winter months are chock-full of holidays — which often include some delicious foods. With the lack of motivation to work out in the colder weather and so many celebrations taking place, it’s easy to pack on a few extra pounds. However, even a small amount of excess weight can place unnecessary stress and strain on your joints. If you plan to indulge in sweets and treats, be sure to do this in moderation and to work exercise into your daily routine. Maintain Hydration When it’s hot outside, it seems like that’s the ideal time to pay attention to your water intake. However, the dry winter air can also make you feel dehydrated. Your body relies on hydration to lube your joints properly, so pay attention to your water intake. Dress Properly In the cold weather, be sure to layer up, and don’t forget the mittens and gloves. When our joints and appendages become cold, the achiness is soon to follow — and it can take

a while to warm them up. Have you ever had cold feet, literally? It can be extremely painful. So, do yourself a favor and be proactive about protecting your body from the cold. Be Cozy Indoors When you’re inside, maintain a warm and comfortable temperature. Continued exposure to drafts and cold temperatures both indoors and outdoors can wreak havoc on your joints, leaving you tossing and turning at night and struggling to perform normal daily motions and activities. Stay Busy The more we focus on our achy joints, the more they seem to plague us. Soothe your senses and find a hobby to enjoy, a good book to read, a friend to visit with, or a task to take your mind off the pain and tension in your joints. If your joint pain is preventing you from enjoying certain activities, causing loss of sleep, or affecting your quality of life, call us today to see how we can help. We are ready to develop a plan so you can manage and reduce your joint pain.

Reducing Winter Joint Pain

6 Ways to Combat Winter Joint Pain The winter months bring the holidays and some of the most cheerful times of the year! However, winter also brings shorter and darker days, cold weather, and — for some — an increase in existing joint pain. In fact, when the temperatures drop and the snow falls, many people notice the pain in their joints becomes more apparent. If you fall into this category and feel that joint pain plagues you a little more in the colder weather, rest assured it isn’t just your imagination. Cold weather can cause your muscles to tense and tighten up (which is why it’s extra important to stretch before exercising in cooler weather). The increased tension leads to less movement, flexibility, and mobility in the joints, increasing the pain you feel. Remember, movement is medicine. WINTER MONTHS HAVE ARRIVED

When the blustery temperatures settle in, here are a few quick ways to help you combat achy joints.
