QUALITIES OF A COACH Competent

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MENTOR AND COACH

Performer Persistent Assertive and demanding Technical and human skill expert Strategic thinker Ambitious

MENTOR Gives life skills and keeps mentee focused Is right brain driven and is relationship oriented Is chosen by the mentee

COACHING Works on behavioural attributes and beliefs of protégée Is left brain driven and is result oriented Is given to the protégée

TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS A coach should have the right mindset for the coaching intervention to be effective. Transactional analysis plots a coach in one of the four quadrants according to the perception he holds about himself and his protégée. Coach who thinks that both he and his protégée is okay, falls in the first quadrant and is the most effective coach. He has high self esteem and faith in the capabilities of his protégée, which translate into excellent results. A coach who thinks that he is okay but his protégée is not okay ends up giving the protégée a discourse, never allowing the coaching session to be an interactive discussion. A coach who thinks he is himself not okay but believes that his protégée is okay, risks a reversal of roles making the coaching process ineffective. Finally, a coach who thinks that neither he nor his protégée is okay, falls in the fourth quadrant and is a complete failure. He, in fact, can pollute the organisational culture as the coaching session would then become a cribbing session.
