Program Overview What is a MADD VIP?

The purpose of MADD Victim Impact Panels is to:

• present a healing opportunity to victim survivors of substance impaired driving

• provide attendees with insight or ‘perspective’ of individuals whose lives have been impacted by this 100% preventable crime

• raise awareness with offenders to prevent future offenses, ultimately saving lives and preventing injuries.

What MADD Expects

• Change the mindset and behavior of individuals in attendance

• Understand the tragic consequences of one’s choice

• A positive, productive and healing program where everyone is part of the solution, and everyone is together in saving lives

Confidentiality

• MADD VIP staff and volunteers are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of all information proprietary, privileged or otherwise, to which they may be exposed during the program

• Business Casual

Volunteer Responsibilities

Administrative duties

• Assist with set up and clean up

• Registration and collect funds

• Distribute evaluations

• Sign Out (Certificate Distribution)

• Victims Survivors

• Moderators

• Law Enforcement / First Responders

• Offenders

Volunteer Role Presenters

Victim Survivors

• Share personal journey on the impact of impaired driving

• Share in a non-judgmental and non-lecturing manner

Moderator

• General Talking Points on MADD (i.e. History, Mission, etc.)

• Sets the tone of the panel

• Timekeeper and Announcer of Housekeeping rules

• Assist with transitioning between speakers and/or videos

• Responsible for collecting and mailing paperwork and money orders PROMPTLY following the panel (if volunteer led) - Missouri

Law Enforcement / First Responders

• Brief synopsis of your background (i.e., what dept. you work for and how long) • Focus on areas like accounts of impaired driving arrests or responding to alcohol and/or drugged-related crashes • Other areas related to crashes like death notification or what it’s like to work a crash scene • Explain how working crashes and victims’ families affect you professionally and personally • Humanize it to where attendees realize that your job saves lives and spares families from having to live the realities of what some of the other speakers have gone through with losing their loved ones

Offenders

• Sharing personal / professional journey about the impact of their choice • Stay on task and focus on the impaired driving aspect of their journey

* There are special conditions in which offender speakers must meet prior to speaking at Victim Impact Panels *

Best Practices For VIP

• CUSTOMER SERVICE IS #1!

• Attitude will set the tone of the class whether it be registration or speaking

• Speak clearly and loud enough for folks to hear

• When completing registration information, print legibly and remind attendees to do the same

• Begin promptly and end on time or earlier if need be

• Read surveys AFTER the attendees have left

• Answer questions only after the panel is over!

• If you cannot answer the question, refer them to the MADD office

MADD’s Victim Impact Panel Structure

Recommended Structure

• Registration

– 30 minutes prior to the start of the panel

• Opening by Moderator

– Approximately 10 minutes

• Speakers

– Approximately 20 minutes each

– Approximately 5 minutes in-between each speaker by the Moderator

• Closing by Moderator

– 5 minutes

• Contact your local MADD office to express your area of interest

– Completed Online Application and Background Check

– Signed VIP Volunteer Agreement

• For those who would like to share their journey, connect with the appropriate Victim Services Specialist in your state to work to develop your talking points

– Once this is drafted, set up a time to share your journey with the Victim Services Specialist and other staff or volunteers

• Attend at least one (1) in person Victim Impact Panel; watch the online Victim Impact Panel program
