“Vigilance” Watercolor and ink on paper 14” x 19” was created at MoMA during the Gauguin exhibition, highlighting natives from the South Pacific. (The Museum of Modern Art, New York City). I found the security guard as interesting as the paintings I was looking at, and a story formed in my mind. I started thinking about
what it takes to care for these paintings and the figures within. That’s when the guard became essential to the narrative. The guard was protecting the art in a safe and cool room, and he needed to be forever watchful. Vigilance also allows the figures in the painting to be childlike without knowing they are being safeguarded.
“Vigilance stands idle alert, ever alert. As innocence beckons a spirit awakens she knows not why, noy psch, child like” - Shoosty
