Over the years, our firm has represented people at their most vulnerable — patients harmed by hospitals, families grieving preventable losses, and individuals failed by the very systems meant to care for them. We take each of our cases personally, but some stand out because of the severity of the harm and clear failures in care that demand accountability. Christopher Williamson’s case was one of those. In May 2020, Mr. Williamson was detained at the Williamsburg County Detention Center. He should have received routine care for a known medical condition. Instead, over the course of 19 days, his pleas for help went unanswered. He was suffering from severe benzodiazepine withdrawal, something any trained medical provider knows can be serious without medical intervention. Still, despite clear signs of distress, it was alleged that the jail’s contracted medical provider failed to monitor or medicate him properly. He suffered multiple seizures, a stroke, and developed stage 4 pressure ulcers from being left immobile on a concrete floor for days. By the time he was finally taken to the hospital, the damage was done. Mr. Williamson now lives with permanent brain damage and injuries that will follow him for the rest of his life. While it doesn’t undo the damage, a Williamsburg County jury recently awarded him $10 million in a medical negligence lawsuit against Southern Health Partners, Inc., and former medical director Sara Thacker, NP. That verdict included $700,000 in economic damages — more than $600,000 of it for medical bills — and $9.3 million in non- economic damages for the pain and lifelong consequences he now endures. Southern Health Partners is a private health care company that contracts with county jails in 18 states. In this case, the jury found that both the company and its local medical director acted with gross negligence by failing in their duty to provide safe and competent care to their patient. This When Care Is Denied A $10M Verdict for Our Client

case wasn’t about a momentary lapse in judgment. This was repeated failure, day after day, to provide the basic care everyone deserves. We’re proud of the work we did for our client in this case, but we’re also thankful the jury saw the truth. Cases like this remind us why we do what we do. No one should suffer this kind of harm, especially not under the supervision of people tasked with caring for their well-being. Being arrested doesn’t erase your humanity or strip you of the right to medical care. And it doesn’t mean your suffering should go unseen. At Evans Moore, LLC, we believe every person — no matter their circumstances — deserves dignity, medical care, and justice when that care is denied. We will continue to hold institutions accountable when they fail to meet the basic standards of care and respect owed to every human being.

New Tech You’ll Actually Use SMARTER GADGETS FOR EVERYDAY LIFE

Technology moves fast, and keeping up with the latest releases can be hard. But not every shiny new gadget deserves your attention. However, a few standouts are worth watching as they hit store shelves in 2025. The latest Consumer Electronics Show at the beginning of this year spotlighted the newest products that promise to make life easier, more connected, and more fun. One example? The Even Realities G1 glasses. Unlike other smart glasses, these look like regular eyewear but are packed with features. They have turn-by-turn navigation, a quick note display, and even a teleprompter mode that could change how presenters and content creators work on the fly. Then there’s the AMP fitness machine. This compact home gym is a smart all-in-one system that trades bulky weight plates and in-person training for digital weights and a companion mobile workout app. The best part? It takes up about as much space as a slim but tall nightstand.

Gamers will want to check out the OhSnap MCON. This simple gadget turns any smartphone into a handheld gaming device. It gives off serious PSP Go vibes for a nostalgic feel and avoids the clunky attachments associated with similar devices like the Backbone. And if you’re the kind of person who loses their wallet every other week, keep your eye out for the MOFT MagSafe Wallet. It’s sleek, functional, and compatible with Apple Find My, so you’ll never lose your wallet again. It even has a built-in 70dB chirp feature for when you’re sure it’s somewhere nearby but can’t quite spot it. All these products have something simple in common: They solve problems without overcomplicating things. Today’s best tech focuses on offering smart design and useful features built to fit into real life rather than just impress in a flashy demo.

WHAT I LEARNED THIS SUMMER

INSIDE MY INTERNSHIP AT EVANS MOORE

while helping with the litigation process and received invaluable advice, feedback, and encouragement from every attorney at the firm. My experience also gave me new insights that shaped my perspective about the practice of law. I learned that every client is unique, and achieving justice requires an investment in knowing them on a personal level. The reality of practicing law involves many emotions, feelings, and concerns from clients simply seeking to return to their way of life before they were wronged or injured. This summer, I watched the lawyers at Evans Moore support clients facing a range of injuries and difficult situations. I saw how stressful litigation can be and how important it is for lawyers to guide clients through every step. Seeing the attention and care the Evans Moore team gave every client showed me the responsibility attorneys carry and the trust placed in them because of it. Learning law takes time. After completing my first year of law school,

I felt excited and prepared to begin my internship. I quickly realized, however, that there were many concepts I did not yet know. My classroom education gave me a solid foundation, but applying the law in the real world was more complex and nuanced. The attorneys at Evans Moore showed me it takes practice and repetition to understand the law. I also saw how essential it is to learn from a skilled team and to approach the work with curiosity, persistence, and a willingness to tackle tough problems. My internship helped me understand the value of multiple perspectives, and I saw how great attorneys anticipate the unexpected, think quickly, and argue creatively. Though I still have much to learn, my experience with Evans Moore gave me the confidence and motivation to keep growing my understanding of the law.

“We take it personally” are the first words I heard about Evans Moore. From witnessing hearings and depositions to researching litigation and assisting with a jury trial that resulted in a substantial verdict for the firm’s client, I saw what those words meant during my internship with Evans Moore this summer. My summer internship at the firm helped me learn and grow as a law student — not only in the areas I had hoped, but also in many ways I did not anticipate. I assisted with various cases and witnessed the skill, care, and dedication necessary to handle complicated legal matters. I encountered new challenges and learning opportunities

When to Seek Help After a Youth Sports Injury

Directions

TAKE A BREAK! 6. For a medium-rare steak, remove from grill at 130 F internally, and for medium, remove at 140 F. 7. Let the meat rest on a cutting board for 5–10 minutes. Then, slice against the grain into thin pieces and enjoy! 1. In a large bowl, whisk together marinade ingredients. 2. Place the flank steak in a large, rimmed dish. Pour the marinade over the meat. 3. Refrigerate and allow to marinate for 15 minutes. Flip and let marinate for another 15 minutes. 4. Preheat grill to 400 F. 5. Add the meat to the grill and cook for 3–5 minutes on each side. Leave the grill lid open to avoid overcooking.

It’s that time of year again. The fields are filling up, kids are pulling on jerseys, and parents are packing folding chairs in the trunk. The fall sports season is just around the corner. Whether your kid is involved in football, soccer, cheer, or another activity, it’s an exciting time but also a season when injuries happen. Youth sports are usually exactly what they should be — fun, challenging, and full of lessons. But no matter the sport, the potential for injuries is always there. Sometimes, it’s a twisted ankle or a pulled muscle. Other times, it’s more serious, and that’s when parents need to know what to watch for. Concussions get a lot of attention these days, and for good reason. Kids’ brains are still developing, and a concussion can change how a child thinks, learns, or behaves. The right response makes all the difference. If your child takes a hit to the head, they should immediately come out of the game. They also need a proper medical evaluation, not just a coach’s say-so. Most leagues and schools are required to follow concussion protocols, including return-to-play steps. But those protocols aren’t always followed the way they should be. Concussions aren’t the only concern, though. Some preventable injuries happen because of clear oversights: a poorly maintained field, a coach who lets kids “walk it off” when they need rest, or practices that don’t follow safety guidelines. Overuse injuries are also a growing issue, especially in kids who play one sport year-round. If your gut tells you something isn’t right, trust it. Kids may not speak up for themselves, and when injuries happen because adults fail to do their job, families deserve answers. We’ve worked with parents in situations like this. If you ever have questions about whether your child’s injury could have been prevented or whether proper care was given after the fact, give us a call. We’re here to help you figure out the next step.

Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee and North Carolina The Smoky Mountains are a fall favorite known for their endless ridgelines and misty valleys.
