Dear Keeper of the Seating Charts, A charity gala may feature orchids and string music, but the seating chart remains a tactical operation conducted in evening clothes. Your friend knows this. She is applying pressure be- cause she believes friendship should provide benefits unavailable at the ticket desk.

Do not move the other couple. They should not lose their seats because someone louder has discovered the language of implied social consequences. Ask the gala chair or executive di- rector to approve the arrangement so you are speaking for the organization, not defending a personal decision. Then tell your friend, “The seating plan reflects sponsorship commitments, accessibility needs and the charity’s established relationships. I cannot promise a particular placement, but I hope you will join us and support the evening.” Do not reveal donation amounts, compare guests or explain the hidden arith- metic of the room. If her ticket level guaranteed a table location, honor it. Other- wise, she purchased admission, dinner and the opportunity to support the cause, not proximity to a more desirable surname. Her threat to withdraw support reveals whether her generosity serves the mission or her social ambitions. Keep a private record of the complaint and your response. Fundraising organizations develop astonishing amnesia when an offended guest calls a different committee member, and a written note prevents several altered versions of the grievance. After the gala, recommend clearer ticket and sponsorship benefits. Guests should know which levels include table place- ment, recognition or host access. Transparency will not cure vanity, but it deprives vanity of a contractual argument. Remain pleasant at the event. Greet her warmly, introduce her table-mates thoughtfully and refuse to look frightened. A seating chart can survive disappointment. So can a friendship that deserves the name.
