as a grandparent, and a citizen,” exclaimed Carkner. “I am not doing this as a school trustee.” A survey held by the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) in 2011 indicated 54 per cent of students have tried illicit drugs by the age of 13 years in this region. “Drug use and underage drinking has been an issue dealt with bymany families over the years in our communities,” explained Carkner. “As a grandmother now, I want to do everything possible to helpmy grandchildren and their friends make wise choices as they grow up.” The program is currently offered in En- glish, however a French version is being developed, which will be ready in the spring. The cost for this program is $4,500 for the first year, and $500 for each year after that tomaintain licensing. “We need local dona- tions to cover the cost of the program and other expenses,” said Carkner. She is hoping to begin the program in the fall, offering the program three times per year. Approxima- tely 24 volunteers will be required to run things smoothly. Students are welcome to volunteer, earning community service hours by doing so. Carkner will be holding an information evening onWednesday, August 19 at 7 p.m., at the Anglican ChurchHall next to Higgin- son Tower. “We need to hear your thoughts about the material we will share with you and to seek out organizations or individuals whomay be interested in sponsoring and/or volunteering to help out with this program,” Carkner said. “As communities, we want to send a clear message to our youth that we care and we will guide them towards making a positive choice that will impact their future and ours.”
