INSIDE THE

REVIEW

WORDS FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Welcome to the 2017 Asian Wine Review. Since the release of the first edition in early 2016, the reception and exposure of winemakers in Asia has increased dramatically. This has been noticeably witnessed through a rise in Asian wine brands being listed in importer’s and wholesaler’s portfolios, which in turn has inspired the procurement for the on and off trade sectors. This latest edition sees over a threefold increase in the number of wines tasted in comparison to the previous year, with the numbers of submissions being just shy of three hundred. The major contributors to the increased submissions

is largely due to a significant number of new wineries, governing wine bodies and associations providing increased support and investment into the visibility of the region’s wine producers. I’d also like to note that it is wonderful to see submissions received by wineries owned by large powerhouse corporations as their new Asia based projects start to hit the market. The review process for 2017 has been fine-tuned to ensure the best wines are selected. The systematic judging process of having three panels of judges led by a chairman ensured all wines are screened fairly, consistently and professionally. This system, aligned with several other international competitions, should be able to offer results and comments that will be of high value to both the winemaker and winery as they promote their products. It is by no means a low priority that I conclude on expressing my sincerest gratitude to all our sponsors, venue partners, wineries, wine bodies and panel judges for their continued support of the Asian Wine Review and its ambitions to be the leading voice on wines produced in Asia. Furthermore, the ongoing success of this review would not be possible without the continued hard work and belief from the team at The Flying Winemaker. For this, I say a big thank you!

I trust you will enjoy reading and continuing your journey in the exploration of the great wines of Asia.

WHY ASIA MATTERS

FONGYEE WALKER

MW

This year has been an exciting one for Chinese wineries. With greater investment and planning particularly in the regions of Xinjiang and Ningxia, the industry is looking to increasingly professionalise. A wider range of styles that target the emerging young urban consumers is becoming available, such as semi-sweet rosés and sparkling wines made by local wineries. Of course, the traditional Bordelais style was still ever present with the launch of luxe labels by well-known international

corporations who now make wine in high-altitude Yunnan, scooping many of the awards in international compeitions. However, Shiraz and Chardonnay are fast becoming contenders, produced by smaller or independent wineries.

DENIS GASTIN

Wine Writer, Wine Judge and Wine Educator

The Asian Wine Review is an important platform to tell the exciting story of wine production in Asia to both raise the profile of the industry within the Asian region as well as to open the minds of a global audience which, for the most part, is unaware of either the history of wine in Asia or the modern Asian wine industry. The wine industry in the region has been evolving strongly, and modernising, over the past 30 years. There are now more than 1000 wineries in Asia. Most of them are in China, which has

the longest wine history in Asia and is now ranked by the OIV as the world’s 5th largest wine producing country. Japan’s winemaking dates back to the late 1800s and there are now more than 200 wineries nationally, covering practically every Prefecture. The 3rd largest producing country in Asia is India, now with just over 90 wineries. There is modern viticulture and winemaking in Thailand, Indonesia (Bali), Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea and Myanmar. So there are lots to discover for the world’s wine adventurers and much excitement to be found in the increasing number of Asian wineries stunning judging panels worldwide with gold medal and trophy winning wines.

2

HOW THE AWR IS JUDGED

1

What wines were eligible for the 2017 review ?

Nearly 300 wines from over 100 different Asian wineries were blind-tast- ed for the 2nd edition of the Asian Wine Review. Wineries were able to submit as many wines, or as few, to the review as they choose.

2

Where did the wines for the AWR come from ?

Samples were submitted directly by the wineries. The wineries in this year’s edition are spread across nine Asian nations: China, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Lebanon, Myanmar, Russia and Thailand.

3

Who reviewed the AWR submissions ?

A tasting panel of 10 judges was chosen to blind taste the entire selection of wines submitted to the AWR. The selection of this year’s panel took into account keep representation from an all-encompassing perspective of the wine industry. Leaders in the industry from on-premise, media, distribution and production were equally represented. Full details on the judging panel can be found on page 6 .

4

Where did we review the wines ?

The tasting took place at a designated Hong Kong location under controlled conditions to eliminate bias. Wines were presented at optimum temperatures following careful storage, and judges were unaware of participating brands until after completion of all tasting.

3

5

Why strictly a blind tasting ?

Asia as a whole already battles misconceptions of its wine offerings. The aim of the AWR is not to promote wines that spend the most on marketing. Instead we aim to assist consumers and fellow wine trade workers in confidently identifying the best wines produced in Asia. Therefore, our judges adhere to blind tasting rules to uphold this value. Judges are only told the grape varietal and vintage. Winery names and regions are not revealed, so that price nor the reputation of the winery has any influence on ratings or evaluation.

6

How were the wines tasted ?

The wines were arranged by category: sparkling, white, rosé, red and sweet. Within each category they were then arranged by varietal, starting with the lightest through to the heaviest (based on standard expressions). Finally, each varietal was arranged by sugar content, starting with the driest through to the sweetest (based on provided technical information). Judges were split into three groups, with an appointed Captain. Group discussion was encouraged so that groups came to a unanimous score per wine as recorded by the Captain. Wines to be judged were hidden behind a wall from the judges at all times.

4

INTRODUCTION

There is archaeological evidence that wine was first produced in China around 212 B.C. In the past twenty years, China’s wine production has evolved into a robust industry, and has earned it recognition in the international world of wine as a global player. China accounts for approximately 3% of global wine production and there are about 450 wineries in the country. There has been a dramatic shift towards the consumption of wine by Chinese consumers and it is currently ranked as the 5th wine consuming country in the world.

INFORMATION

Xinjiang Bainian winery is located in Tianshan Mountains, one of the most important regions along the ‘Silk Road’. The winery was established in 2007, producing more than 5,000 tonnes of wine per annum. The winery is influenced by a warm continental climate with distinctive seasonal differences. This allows grapes to mature slowly in order to provide the high quality needed for premium winemaking.
