DECEMBER 7, 1941 THE BIBLE: GOD’S WORD TO ME P salm 19:7; 119:72, 97, 103; ’ H ebrews 4:12 Introduction Figures often tell a story more im pressive than words. The following statistics, issued by the Department of Commerce, Bureau of Censue, Washing ton, D. C., concern the number of Bibles, Testaments, and other portions of the Word of God published in this country in various years, and they prove that the Bible is increasingly in demand: ,1935 .........,.................... 591,173 copies 1937 .................. ..... 5,579,317 copies 1939 .......................7,927,848 copies It would seem apparent that a grow ing number o f persons are coming to say, each for ’himself, that the Bible is “God’s Word t o 1Me.’’ We should praise God for this fact. Yet there are still thousands of hearts and homes in which the Word of God has no place at all. The privilege of owning a copy of Gotfs Word and of reading it, unafraid of punishment. for so doing,, is one of the choice aspects of American liberty. In many parts of the world, this free dom does not exist today. When Amer ica first occupied Manila (according to a report in .the Watchman-Examiner), one of the crimes for which men were being imprisoned was that of reading the Bible. Soon after the “Stars and Stripes” were raised over that land, prison doors were opened, and men in carcerated for this cause were set free. One day a man came to an American missionary and asked to see him in strict privacy. When they were alone, he asked in a whisper whether it were true that he, could noW read his Bible without fear of imprisonment. The missionary took him to a window and pointed to the American -flag floating from a near-by building, and he said, “So long as you see that flag floating oyer ypur country, you can sit on the ridgepole of your house, if you want to, and read your Bible, and no one can molest you.” Do we value highly enough the glorious privilege? The texts chosen for meditation in connection with this lesson show the Word of God to be (1) Perfect; (2) Sure; (3) Better than the best things of earth; and (4) Powerful.

For Those Who Have Topics l . PERFECT—FOR SALVATION (Psa. 19:7). Note that “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Rom. 10:17; cf. Jas. 1:18, 21; 1 Pet. 1:23).' Mention persons who heard (or read) God’s word, believed, and were saved. These will include such characters as the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:26-38); Cornelius and his household (Acts 10:44; cf. 11:13-15); Lydia (Acts 16:14, 15); the Philippian jailer (Acts 16:30-34, esp. v. 32) ; the woman of Samaria (John 4:7-29); and the man born blind (John 9:1-38). II. SURE—FOR GUIDANCE (Psa. 19:7). 1. It guides away from danger (Psa. 17:4; 18:30). 2. It is an unfailing guide (Prov. 3:5, 6; Psa. 119:105). George Muller, writing on “How I Ascertain God’s Will,” haS given the following advice: “I seek at the beginning to get my heart into such a state that.it has no will of its own in regard to a given matter. Nine-tenths of the difficulties are overcome when our hearts are ready to do the Lord’s., will, whatever it may be. . . . I seek the will of the Spirit of God • through, or in connection with,-the Word of God. . . . Next, I take into account providential circum stances. These often plainly indi cate God’s will in connection with His Word and Spirit. I ask God in prayer to reveal His will to me aright. Thus, through prayer to God, the study of the Word, and re flection, I come tb a deliberate judgment according to the best of mÿ ability and knowledge, and if my mind is thus at peace, and con tinues so after two or three more petitions, I proceed accordingly.” m . B E T T E R THAN THE B E S T THINGS OF EARTH—FOR SAT ISFACTION (Psa. 119:72, 97, 103). 1. Better than wealth (v. 72; cf. 162). 2. Better than the highest human thoughts (v. 97; 1 Cor. 1:18, 19). ,3. Better than food (v. 103; cf. Jer. 15:16; Psa. 19:10; Job 23:12). IV. POWERFUL-^FOR USE (Heb. 4: 12 ) . - 1. A s a m ean s to spiritu al d lscem -
