Let all lovers of souls and all workers in the service' of the gospel take cour age. Time spent in prayer will yield more than that given to work. Prayer alone gives work its. worth and its suc cess. Prayer^opens the way for God Himself to do His work in us and through' us. Let. our chief work, as God’s messengers, be intercession; in it we secure the presence and power of God to go with us.—Andrew Murray. 10. Our Garrison “Thepeace-of God, which passeth all understanding, shall Reep [garrison] your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:7). This military term, “garrison,” oc curs in the original Greek. Our hearts which, in time of crisis, are inclined to have j “that sinking feeling,” to go “all to pieces,” to be fearful and fainting, can be made strong and resolute, un movable and impenetrable as a military garrison. This can be so with every one of us. . . .The peace of God—God’s pgace-—the peace which God enjoys— we can share in that!” ,, —A London Journalist. 11. The Shepherd Goes Before “And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice” (John 10:4). He doesn’t DRIVE His sheep. Nor does He merely SEND them out to service . . . He goes before them. . . . Young Christian, fear not .to leave the way to Him. He has traveled the way before. He knows all about it. He has gone before in life, in death, in resur-; rection, in weariness, in temptation, in service, in affliction. . . . Step out with confidence, giving all to Him, and leav ing the future to Him. He is not a disappointment.. —Wendell P. Loveless. 12. Exchange “The blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness Without works” (Rom. 4:6). All that is His is imputed to me. Oh, lovely and fair Is my Lord, And He gives me the robe of His own righteousness To cover my sins, says His Word! All that I am is imputed to Him. Oh, black were my shame and my guilt , Which were laid upon Him on Calvary’s cross, But precious His blood that was spilt! Was ever a bargain so wondrous as this? Oh, matchless His love and His grace! My guilt for His glory, my pain for His .peace, My night for the light of His face! —Selected.

IS. The World’s Hatred “These things have I spoken unto you, that ye shoulij not be offended. They shall put you out of the syna gogues: yea, the time cometh, that who soever killeth you will think that he doeth God service” (John 16: 1, 2). We are witnesses of a rejected Christ to a world of evil. . . . We are witnesses of the spirit of truth against Satan and his spirits of error,, which rule the world. Hence the world dislikes, de spises, hates, persecutes. Every one that will walk as Christ did, and in His Spirit, will suffer persecution. Be not stumbled, then, believer! Do not argue, as if when you are hated the world must be right in its hatred, and you erroneous. —The Dawn. 14. The Old Surroundings “My soul thirsteth for thee” (Psa. 63: 1). “My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness” (Psa. 63:5). The natural life may be happy . . . but when God gives the word that leads to faith in Himself, the soul begins to experience a thirst which nothing short of God can ever satisfy. It is not, per haps; that . . . the old surroundings have changed for the worse, but we have changed.—C. Russell Hurditch. 15. Telling Him Beforehand “His disciples . . . went and told Jesus” (Matt, 14:12). - Tell him in time,' not merely in the crisis of some trial or temptation, but in view of it. Before you reach the cor ner—you know not what may be beyond it—it is well to be prepared. Thus you go in -the known presence to the un known thing. Something is always just going to happen. How much better then for us to be always telling Jesus before hand!—Handley C. G. Moule. 16. “Fear Not” “For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee” (Isa. 41:13). “Fear not,” God said to Abraham. “Fear not,” Joseph said to his breth ren. “Fear not,” said Moses to the people. “ Fear not,” God said to Joshua, and to Israel under the judges, . . . Jonathan, taught by David (for he never learned it from Saul, his father), said, “Fear not,” to David his lover. “Fear not,” said Elijah to the widow of Zarephath, and Elisha to his servant, for God had first taught “Fear not” to them.—Sunday School Times. ■ 17. Victors in Him “For he hath put all things under his feet” (1 Cor. 15:27). . There is no foe to your growth in grace, no enemy in your Christian work, which was not included in your Sav iour’s conquests. Be sure that you have
