The South is Back & So is Print!

J ust days before shipping this issue to the printer we received some great news from the main office in Memphis, Tennesse. The revered Street Rod Nationals South will be back on the NSRA Event Schedule in 2026. It was a very disappointing time for many rodders when the 51st Street Rod Nationals South didn’t make it on the 2025 Event Schedule. Since then, finding a suitable facility with available dates to bring the South to a new location became priority one after the great 50th Anniversary event at Chilhowee Park & Exposition Center in 2024. In 2026 the 51st Street Rod Nationals South will be held in Johnson City, Tennessee, May 8- 9, 2026. Ideally situated in one of the hotbeds of today’s rodding activity, the “Appalachian Fair” facil- ity will be ready for any size gathering. From thrilling festivals to engaging community events, there’s always something happening at this lively fairground, including concerts and touring All Star Monster Trucks. Appalachian Fair is in an area known as the “Tri-Cities” comprising the cities of Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol, plus surrounding smaller towns and communities in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. All three cities are in Northeast Tennessee, while Bristol has a twin city of the same name in Virginia. The Tri-Cities, considered one population center, is the fifth largest in Tennessee. For those cruising to the South in Knoxville for many years we hope they remember the beautiful lake, “Lobeck’s Corner,” the street leading to the underpass and the great people and cars that came together every year. But change is a part of life and no matter how small or big, it’s how we react after the change that really matters. We can’t avoid change in our lives, but we can create new chapters. The 51st Street Rod Nationals South will be the first page of a new chapter for the South as it continues a legacy as one of the best rodding events around. Such is the case today with electronic communi- cation’s takeover of the print world as we knew it only 15 years ago. When that chapter closed and a new one had everyone ‘switching over’ to web traffic and gaining worldwide eyeballs, savvy mar- keters responded by understanding the value of internet presence, while not forgetting the value of print and sponsorships to make sure their company

doesn’t fall “out of sight—out of mind” with their core customers. Industry-leading fastener manufacturer ARP (Automotive Racing Products) has just published and updated a full-line catalog for 2025. The 180- page, full-color publication details the 5,500-plus fastener kits manufactured by ARP. A large section

is devoted to v a l u a b l e t echn i ca l information with several dozen pages devoted to the science of fastener manufactur- ing and their proper use. In addition to the many kits c o v e r i ng engine, driv- eline and accessory fas- teners, the

catalog details the many specialty products and tools from ARP that facilitate efficient engine assembly. This catalog represents a new trend in market- ing where more and more companies are using all assets available, including online viewing, capabili- ties to download a PDF of the catalog, or this print- ed version that can be requested at www.ARP- bolts.com. They even provide personalized techni- cal assistance by calling 800-826-3045. Not only does ARP sponsor some of the most prestigious awards in our industry they also make sure they’ll be present in every shop with a bonus 22” x 11” pull-out poster of the record-holding “Speed Demon” streamliner. Our lives would be boring if they could be told in one chapter so embrace change because you never know what the next chapter will bring.

Regrets & Apologies Hi Tom,

into Fox Body Mustangs and since then we started going to the Carlisle All Fords Weekend together. I’ve recently seen some dis- cussion about attending two or three day events and want to say most of the time we never stay for the Sunday part of the show. Either I wanted to get back to relax before having to be back at work or with my adult children and grandchil- dren that go with me, they need to be back for the same reason. I’ve never gone to shows for prizes or trophies because my cars are drivers and solely intended for fun. I now cruise a ‘57 Ford and my granddaugh- ters love going with me which means more than anything. Most of the shows we attend are a couple hours away and when people ask, I tell them this car is a driver not a museum piece. My neighbors have been great over the years with all the projects my sons and I have worked on over the years, both without and with the shop we built. There were times my backyard looked like a small junkyard, but we kept it neat, and it kept my boys out of trouble. Personally I like the paper copy of StreetScene versus the web copy. I can sit away from all distractions and relax while hold- ing and reading it. I’ve enjoyed being happy and proud to be a NSRA member for all these years and hope my letter wasn’t too long. I feel good letting others read about the impact NSRA has had on our family.

I was recently reminded about the level of quality service that exists amongst rodders. My older coilovers needed rebuild- ing so I sent them to Aldan American via USPS for servicing. Lo and behold all that arrived was the shipping label with “sin- cere regrets & apologies” for your loss from the USPS. The standard $100 insurance didn’t begin to cover it. Steven and the service team at Aldan American agreed to provide and service another pair of used coilovers for the same price as servicing my lost pair. They arrived today and l’m certain they are a brand- new pair! I felt impelled to share my thanks to Aldan American for their excellent customer service! I started going to the NSRA Street Rod Nationals East in 1978 and became a member in 1980. I met a good friend at that first show who had just learned about NSRA and we haven’t missed a show since. My son started going with us in 1983 at seven-years-old and only missed one show until he passed away of cancer in 2023. His wife trav- eled to the shows with him and then their daughter at eight months old. My son had gotten

Congress has an opportunity to stop California’s disastrous regulation, which requires 100% of new cars, SUVs, and small trucks sold in California and 11 other states to be zero-emissions vehicles (ZEV) by 2035. Congress is owed the opportunity to deter- mine whether a single state should be empowered to enact a heavy-handed policy that would have broad, national implications to the economy, the entire automotive aftermarket industry and consumers. If not stopped by Congress, the Clean Air Act waiver that the EPA granted would enable California to implement its EV mandates and ban internal com- bustion engine vehicles. Congress, though, can use the CRA to nullify the waivers, thus preserving vehicle choice for con- sumers and halting a policy that would have a disastrous effect on the automotive aftermarket indus- try. APRIL 2025 11

T he National Street Rod Association proudly announces NSRA Autocross will be back in 2025. To continue making this exciting activity a successful part of the events, NSRA’s Southern Illinois State Safety Inspector, Kevin Webb, has agreed to bring his knowledge and expertise in the Autocross community to the newly created NSRA Autocross Director position, coordinating with NSRA Autocross 2025 AutoXperts Promotions. Kevin stated, “Autocross is a great way to safely enjoy your vehicle in a con- trolled track environment. The Autocross program will provide educational opportunities for both new and experienced drivers.” StreetScene maga- zine will bring Autocross coverage from both the 42nd Mid-America Street Rod Nationals and the 56th Street Rod Nationals in 2025. In addition plans call for technical articles in conjunction with our partners and tips on how to zip around those cones safe and fast. Updates will also appear on the NSRA Website and Facebook page. In his new position as NSRA Autocross Director, Kevin answered the following questions in hopes of answering newcomers’ safety concerns and how the program is run. What is Autocross? The basic definition is a type of car racing where drivers navigate a course using traffic cones. Often held on parking lots or airport runways, the course allows you the ability to test both your driving skills, and the overall performance of your vehicle. It’s a timed event where you drive through a specif- ic cone-layout (course) in the fastest, safest way you are comfortable with. The time from start to finish is measured, with seconds added to your time if you hit one of the guide cone. Why would I want to put my car on the track? Remember when you first learned to ride a bike, then drive a car? Every trip was an adven- ture, and as you had more confidence, you tend- ed to go a little faster. Autocross gives you that same feeling again. Most people really have no idea how their vehicle would react in an emer- gency maneuver to avoid an accident. The NSRA

Kevin Webb knows firsthand how Autocross has helped him become more comfortable with his car’s potential by pushing his ‘73 Pontiac Grand Am through the cones at NSRA Autocross events.

Autocross program gives you a chance to sharpen your driving ability and see how your vehicle would handle when pushed to its overall capacity. Unfortunately, we’ve all experienced that “near miss” in all kinds of driving situations and trusting how your vehicle handles could save your life. How much time am I on the track? Since most courses are laid out on parking lots, the average time you’ll spend on each run is about 30-45 seconds. However, if it takes you a minute, that’s okay because you’re learning what you and your car are comfortable with on each run. Think of it as your favorite ride at the amuse- only. In addition, they provide pre-purchase inspections for collector and exotic vehicles. NSRA’s Southern Illinois State Safety Inspector, Kevin Webb was recently appointed NSRA Autocross Director, working in coordination with AutoXperts Promotions at select NSRA events in 2025. With over 30 years of automotive experience and certification as an ASE Master Technician, Kevin owns and operates Hot Rod & Custom Garage, Inc, providing mechanical repairs and upgrades on classics, customs and hot rods

ment park, just a lot more fun. How fast will I be going?

This really depends again on your ability and the handling/speed of your vehicle. Most runs won’t exceed 40 mph, but I can promise you, it feels a lot faster. As you run the course more,

12 APRIL 2025

on the NSRA Autocross webpage. How much does this cost?

you’ll find it’s a lot like other sports; once you understand it, you get better at it. Won’t I risk damage to my car? This is probably the biggest misconception in Autocross. By driving your vehicle to your comfort level, the cone layout will show you how well your vehicle really responds. The cone you might hit or run over is soft plastic, so rarely is there even a mark left behind. Now in saying that, if you push your vehicle beyond its limits, you may expe- rience tire wear or worn brakes. What types of vehicles are allowed? The program is based on two things, safety and fun. The rules and restrictions are clearly provided in our driver and vehicle information sheet. The main restriction is no race cars (we don’t want any- one to be intimidated by the speed they can carry) and no lifted trucks (a tipping or rollover hazard). What are the driver restrictions? All drivers must be 16 years old with a valid dri- ver’s license and are required to sign a liability waiver for NSRA and the Autocross provider. Open-toe shoes/flipflops are not allowed when on the track and other requirements are listed on the NSRA Autocross webpage. Do I have to wear a helmet? YES, due to insurance regulations all drivers and passengers will be required to wear a DOT or Snell-approved helmet. For individuals who do not have one, we will have helmets available at either low-cost rental or no charge depending on the provider. Am I required to have my vehicle inspected? To ensure the safety of drivers, passengers and spectators we will be providing a “check list” for

Any vehicle registered for a NSRA event is eligi- ble to participate in that event’s Autocross Program (except restricted vehicles). There are no additional charges to race, unless you need a helmet. What class will my vehicle be put in? Currently NSRA Autocross will be running the following classes for potential awards: Pre-’49 vehi- cles, Post-’48 vehicles, a Women’s Division and Late Model, depending on the number of partici- pants in each class at the event. Can I bring a newer vehicle to the NSRA Autocross? For cars that do not meet the NSRA require- ments for car show registration, (30-years-and- older) any year/make/model vehicle is allowed to run during this event as long as they have a valid ticket and the vehicle is deemed safe. Participants are required to bring and wear helmets to partici- pate in this event and it will not be run like a typi- cal Autocross where you are limited on runs. At this year’s 56th Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky, July 31, August 1-3, everyone will have the opportunity to get an unlimited amount of runs throughout the day for the ticket price of $115. The ticket gets you, your car, and one other person admission to all four days of the show. How do I find out more about the NSRA Autocross program? A dedicated webpage for NSRA Autocross infor- mation, updates, and driver/passenger/vehicle requirements can be found at nsra-usa.com and we will be posting information and photos on the NSRA Autocross Facebook and Instagram pages. Plus, stay tuned to StreetScene magazine. Any other words of advice? Have fun, be safe and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Remember, it’s always more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow.

D uring the last decade, clas- sic Chevy trucks have seen a sharp increase in popularity among the enthusiast commu- nity. From an enthusiast’s standpoint, the Task Force trucks of the 1950s and the 1967–1972 Action Line trucks are the most popular. However, the rising prices of these trucks often send budget-minded enthusiasts to the Squarebody 1973–1987 models. Now, even the Squarebody trucks are get- ting expensive, so enthusiasts are turning to a more modern era of classic Chevys: the Old Body Style (OBS) trucks from 1988–1998. ARP Salutes The Craftsmen Whose Creations Earn Major Industry Awards Artistry In Metal

Alan Johnson was recognized by the NSRA as its 2024 “Individual of the Year.” And for good reason, as the creations turned out by Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop have earned major plaudits…the latest being the “Grease Monkey Princess” 1932 Ford of McKenzie Murphy —an AMBR Contender— that also graced ARP’s display at the SEMA Show. An important part of the SEMA Show was the annual “Battle of the Builders,” which was won by Noah Alexander and the team at Classic Car Studio for the stunning 1968

Dodge Charger built for Ed Ganzinotti. Both builds feature an array of ARP fasteners, with ARP’s polished stainless steel bolts works of art in their own right. They’re also 20% stronger than Grade 8 hardware —as are the companion black oxide finished 8740 chrome moly bolts. ARP manufactures over 5,500 fastener kits totally in-house at its California facilities. Check them out online (www.ARP-bolts.com)

Wednesday Garage Tour O nce again, the Outlaws Car Club of Pueblo has volunteered to host the Rocky Mountain Nationals Garage Tour around town to some of the best shops featuring some local projects and some unique Man Caves. The tour will leave Melburgers at 8:30am, be sure and come early to attend the drivers meeting and pick up a map and enjoy some coffee and a great cinnamon roll. The club is working on the shops that will be on the tour this year so if you live in the Pueblo area and would like to have your shop on the tour feel free to contact Ted at 719-320-9210. Event Registration The Pueblo Convention Center will again serve as the location for Event Registration at the Rocky Mountain Nationals and will begin at 12 noon on Thursday, June 26, until 6pm, Friday morning it will re- open at 9am until 6pm, and Saturday hours are 9am to 12pm. Be sure and bring your confirmation letter and membership card for a smooth experience. The parking garage across the street will be open with free parking for participants and Safety Inspections will be available. Kick-Off Party & BBQ Once again the Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the BBQ dinner and Kick-Off Party at the Rocky Mountain Nationals on Thursday night. The location is right on the fairgrounds with lots of parking and plenty of shade. The 4H building will be the place, which has lots of seating so everyone can sit and enjoy the food and friend- ship of fellow rodders. This is a major highlight of the event and a great time to visit with friends you haven’t seen all year and enjoy some great food. Be sure and put this on your schedule. On Site Camping Camping on site at the fairgrounds during the Rocky Mountain Nationals sells out every year so if you want a space you need to reach out to them right away at 719-404-2023, ask for Tracy. Most of the reg- ular campers that come to this event every year try and make their reser- vation for the next year before they leave. Tracy does offer a waiting list just in case someone cancels. The only campers that can stay on the fair- grounds during the event are participants and exhibitors. If you want to camp next to one of your friends, please coordinate with Tracy.
