you’ll find it’s a lot like other sports; once you understand it, you get better at it. Won’t I risk damage to my car? This is probably the biggest misconception in Autocross. By driving your vehicle to your comfort level, the cone layout will show you how well your vehicle really responds. The cone you might hit or run over is soft plastic, so rarely is there even a mark left behind. Now in saying that, if you push your vehicle beyond its limits, you may expe- rience tire wear or worn brakes. What types of vehicles are allowed? The program is based on two things, safety and fun. The rules and restrictions are clearly provided in our driver and vehicle information sheet. The main restriction is no race cars (we don’t want any- one to be intimidated by the speed they can carry) and no lifted trucks (a tipping or rollover hazard). What are the driver restrictions? All drivers must be 16 years old with a valid dri- ver’s license and are required to sign a liability waiver for NSRA and the Autocross provider. Open-toe shoes/flipflops are not allowed when on the track and other requirements are listed on the NSRA Autocross webpage. Do I have to wear a helmet? YES, due to insurance regulations all drivers and passengers will be required to wear a DOT or Snell-approved helmet. For individuals who do not have one, we will have helmets available at either low-cost rental or no charge depending on the provider. Am I required to have my vehicle inspected? To ensure the safety of drivers, passengers and spectators we will be providing a “check list” for
Any vehicle registered for a NSRA event is eligi- ble to participate in that event’s Autocross Program (except restricted vehicles). There are no additional charges to race, unless you need a helmet. What class will my vehicle be put in? Currently NSRA Autocross will be running the following classes for potential awards: Pre-’49 vehi- cles, Post-’48 vehicles, a Women’s Division and Late Model, depending on the number of partici- pants in each class at the event. Can I bring a newer vehicle to the NSRA Autocross? For cars that do not meet the NSRA require- ments for car show registration, (30-years-and- older) any year/make/model vehicle is allowed to run during this event as long as they have a valid ticket and the vehicle is deemed safe. Participants are required to bring and wear helmets to partici- pate in this event and it will not be run like a typi- cal Autocross where you are limited on runs. At this year’s 56th Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky, July 31, August 1-3, everyone will have the opportunity to get an unlimited amount of runs throughout the day for the ticket price of $115. The ticket gets you, your car, and one other person admission to all four days of the show. How do I find out more about the NSRA Autocross program? A dedicated webpage for NSRA Autocross infor- mation, updates, and driver/passenger/vehicle requirements can be found at nsra-usa.com and we will be posting information and photos on the NSRA Autocross Facebook and Instagram pages. Plus, stay tuned to StreetScene magazine. Any other words of advice? Have fun, be safe and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Remember, it’s always more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow.
