They decided to have a nice spring trip to the Northeast and had reached their ‘all-48’ goal before I saw them again in York at the 50th. Ed had been dreaming about building his own ’40 Ford convertible for years. He had a few great rods built by others over the years (’42 Chevy coupe, ’40 Ford pickup, ’33 Ford roadster and a ’33 Chevy sedan) and he knew he was going to drive the wheels off his convertible, so a great chassis was required. The standard chassis was boxed up and a Chubby Chassis center crossmember was installed. The front suspension of choice is a FatMan Mustang II with tubular control arms, ECI disc brakes, plus rack and pinion steering. Out back a 3.50 geared Ford 9- inch sits on parallel leaf springs, rides on shocks from Chassis Engineering, and stops on ECI discs with an ECI sourced master cylinder.
