AWARENESS & AVOIDANCE
Preparedness leads to prevention. Most people who are ready to defend themselves rarely have to. We’re going to share with you the top 5 things you must do to stay safe in your everyday life. Many personal safety experts use a color code system to help define and explain the appropriate level of awareness:
Soft Targets. Walking with your head down, talking on cell phone, walking or jogging with ear buds or headphones on, etc.
L EVE L WHI TE
Maintain an easy and relaxed 360º awareness of your surroundings.
L EVE L YE LLOW
Heightened sense of alertness when something or someone catches your eye. Trust your gut!
L EVE L ORANGE
Putting your plan into action. Removing yourself from the situation or responding to the threat. But are you PREPARED?
L EVE L RED
Mentally blacking out and/or freezing if not prepared.
L EVE L BLACK
The goal is to live in Level Yellow, which is a relaxed state with an easy 360° awareness of your surroundings. This includes scanning the area frequently to be away of your surroundings and people. Use your street smarts and exude confidence and purpose in your every day life. Make eye contact with those who approach in your general direction – this helps alert them that you not timid nor an easy target. Be aware, but don’t stare.

HOW TO MAINTAIN LEVEL YELLOW Consistently visualize scenarios of yourself being threatened. Then, think of how you will react. Mentally seeing yourself fight back will help prepare you physically should the situation occur. Use tangible items to remind yourself. Adopt the color yellow with stickers, folders, or wristbands and strategically place these on the door jam, dashboard, mirror, workplace desk, etc.
DISTANCE
Distance will help maintain your safety. We recommend 12 feet minimum between you and a stranger because this gives you time to react if needed. At that distance, the attacker must take at least 2 steps to get to you and their action will be faster than your reaction.
DISTRACTION TECHNIQUES & MAINTAINING DISTANCE
An attacker will try to catch you in a vulnerable state or try to put you in a vulnerable position. You should politely decline and keep a safe distance. If they persist, lie if necessary. Do what you need to get out of or prevent a dangerous situation from occurring. Don’t be afraid to be rude!
TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS
If something or someone doesn’t seem right, they probably aren’t.
HAVE A PLAN: WHEN/THEN THINKING Pre-plan with “When/Then” thinking. This is visualizing your route and the steps you will take to prepare yourself for potential danger. Example: When I walk to my vehicle after work, then I have my defense spray ready in my hand.

PERSONAL ALARMS Personal alarms are handheld devices that sound a loud siren to help attract the attention of others. Select also contain flashing lights to draw even more attention or help you see in the dark.

PERSONAL ALARM VS. PEPPER SPRAY Personal alarms are a great option if you’re in an area surrounded by others, but if you’re ever alone, there will be no one around to hear the siren and call for help. In this situation you would want another safety tool, like pepper spray, that allows you to physically defend yourself. Personal alarms are perfect for traveling. They’re TSA-approved, legal to carry around the world, and a great option for concerts or sporting venues where pepper spray may not be allowed. They’re also a great safety option for younger children. They easily hook onto a backpack or lunchbox and all the child needs to do is press a button or pull out the chain if they were separated from you in a parking lot or on a playground. We recommend a personal alarm for children 8 years old and above. Pepper spray is only legal for those 18 and up.

PEPPER SPRAY & PEPPER GEL Pepper spray is made with oleoresin capsicum (OC) – a natural substance derived from the resin of chili peppers that causes inflammation to the eyes, skin, and nose - and can deploy multiple shots at a distance to deter multiple attackers. These effects temporarily incapacitate the attacker, allowing you an opportunity to escape to safety.

PEPPER SPRAY VS. MACE®
Defends at a Distance Against Multiple Threats Thicker Consistency Makes Blowbacks Less Likely
The term “mace” is often used interchangeably with “pepper spray,” yet it’s vital to understand that “Mace®” and “SABRE®” are both trademarked brand names that manufacture pepper sprays. This means “mace” and “pepper spray” are the same self-defense tool.
PEPPER SPRAY VS. PEPPER GEL
Safer to Use Indoors & Around Others
Pepper gel has the same ingredients and deploys the same way as pepper spray. It has a slightly thicker, stickier substance that gives it additional benefits over traditional pepper spray.
Only Effects What It Directly Touches
Stickiness Makes it Difficult for Attacker to Wipe Off

STUN GUNS A stun gun is a highly effective self-defense tool that emits electrical currents which can cause a would-be attacker to feel intolerable pain, as well as disorienting them, allowing you with a chance to get away to safety. Like pepper sprays and gels, stun guns provide a physical way to defend yourself; however, they must be used in close range to be effective. The stun gun must touch the attacker’s body to deliver the charge.

STUN GUN VS. TASER® Stun guns and TASERs® both emit electrical currents that can cause an attacker to be temporarily incapacitated. TASER ® is not a generic term but the name of a specific self-defense product that shoots out probes that emit electrical currents. TASERs ® can be shot from a distance, allowing you to try to stop an attacker from getting close to you, whereas stun guns must be used within arm’s reach of an attacker.
