SUNDAY FOR THE ADVENTUROUS SOBER SOUL

HALLOWEEN HAPPY SPOOKY NOT TODAY LADY, NOT TODAY.

PARK YOUR BROOM AT THE FRONT DOOR PLEASE

NOT TODAY LADY, NOT TODAY.

editor's note Welcome to our Sunday morning at Hola Sober where we enjoy a little motivation, inspiration, colour, joy, beauty, and fashion over morning coffee as the city kicks into Halloween Eve mode! There is such power in waking up hangover-free any day of the week and to be honest, Sunday mornings are extra special. So many were spent hiding a hangover or feeling ropey but justifying things by blaming some random 'food snack' that I had eaten at midnight... Denial...complete denial...My inbox is filled with women going into their first Halloween and fearful of the whole event. And my answer to them is to get a grip because nine times out of ten you don't even remember your last Halloween escapades. You may have upset your neighbours or your husband, got the children's costume arse over face - whatever unfolded - if alcohol was in the mix - IT WAS NOT FUN. So stop lying to yourself and face up to the fact that you prancing around the village dressed as a witch while drunk IS NOT FUNNY. It's dumb as hell for a fifty-year-old woman to be drunk in the first place let alone, prancing around trick-or-treating. Do yourself a favour this morning and own your story, not some narrative you have created in your head about some romantic version of drunken Halloweens - embrace all that not drinking does this holiday and ENJOY being present and rolling with the punches in all its madness and colour. Not drinking means “I understand myself differently now,” I am no longer wedged between the “I could have been and I never will be - sober.” What does not drinking say to me this sunshine morning, it shouts with a loud clear call saying “Tabitha. You are not crazy. You are a goddamn cheetah.” – Glennon Doyle

Happy Sunday and please join me in the sober dawn chorus as we say not today lady, not today.

Lots of love, Susan Christina Creamer

Hola Sober VILLAGE VOICES

TARA + THOMOND Online Class Wisdom

My headline at the beginning would be “ Canadian woman tries to debunk the saying “ Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” by continuing to drink like a fish and thinking her life is only going to get better. My headline now would be “ In a shock win, Canadian woman’s life has drastically improved at every level after becoming sober after at least 27 attempts” -Trish - Malony TARA

This is forcing me to come face to face with how far I had fallen, how low I had gone. Before Pledge 100, I think my headline might have been something like LOST WOMAN LAST SEEN WANDERING NEAR LAST CHANCE CAVE . After so many attempts at sobriety, even with one non-drinking period of 18 years (yep, talk about the definition of stupidity, picking up a drink again), I truly felt like this was my last hope , my last time chance. Even when I didn’t drink, I felt like I was still a hostage of alcohol and didn’t know how to break free. My headline now could be something like LOST WOMAN FOUND SAFELY IN A SAFE HAVEN. As I sit in meetings and here in our Malony group, I feel like I have found women who have been there, who get it . I hear parts of my story being expressed, so many truths and secrets of my life being told by others, I feel such a relief that I’m not alone and finally, feel hopeful because so many have done the hard work and successfully climbed out. I feel empowered to face my demons and to acknowledge them, work through them, and overcome them. I feel like then, I may start to break free from the chains alcohol still has on me and really start living. To say I am thankful daily for Hola Sober doesn’t even come close to expressing how I feel about this community." -L.F. -Malony TARA

SUNDAY

SUNDAY

Someone in my life who I do really love and care about and told her directly the seriousness of my medical journey this past three month. On hearing it she sent me a message that more or less said…

Dear Sober Queens

There was a time, when I felt myself unworthy, of a person, who could actually never be worthy of me. But not anymore. You see, my friend, there are many ways to spend your time on this earth – but wasting it, on those who are not worthy of your attention, is a crying shame. Use your time wisely. Save your best efforts for those who will return the favour, who will appreciate your attention. Those who truly value you. And the rest? If they do not see you now, they never will. And they are missing out. Make this moment that you realise, your time is precious and should only be bestowed on those who bring you positivity, support, love or joy and whom you can stand in truth with.. Remember, you are the main act, not a warm up, and this, my friend, is no dress rehearsal. This is it. The curtain is well and truly up."

In my world today is a good day as my 81-year-young Uncle Gerry arrived last night and his daughter arrives today so I will have a touch of home for the weekend. He is crossing an ocean this weekend in a show of support, an act of loving by doing and in there is the lesson this morning… He is crossing an ocean for me boarding an aircraft to spend time with his niece. THAT is a POWERFUL act from my late Mam's brother, his second visit in 14 weeks, he is crossing an ocean for me…. "There was a time, when I would have crossed oceans to reach people, who wouldn’t cross a stream for me. There was a time, when I would try, too hard, to be seen by those, who would simply never see me .

" Sorry to hear that Susan, keep me posted."

First fire bomb is the use of the word Susan - my mother called me that when I was being reprimanded or in trouble. My family and friends call me Sue. I remember reading the message thinking……keep you f*cking posted; I have just laid out song and verse how serious this situation is and you have said, keep me posted. That was hard ladies. Very hard. I was hurt. Very hurt. And then I sat back down in that way only a sober woman would understand. I sat back on all that learning we do in this space.

- Donna Ashworth

SUNDAY

All that personal discovery we talk of and I LEANED all the way into it and I DIGESTED THE F(CKING words and something in me snapped - broke even and I knew the game was up because I could no longer PRETEND she was there for me. No bells. No whistles. No ticker tape parade to acknowledge the end of the friendship relationship AND in digesting the f(cking words I REALISED - she had left the building long before now..

“I never let go of anything without leaving claw marks in it…." - Becky Volmer

It ached for a bit, nostalgia took hold for a few hours, and then my sober power took hold of something within me a, and I put my shoulders back and stood the heck up and looked in the eyes of the universe and said “I will no longer cross oceans for those who are not willing to cross a stream for me………" And I walked away from it and told my husband she was NOT to be on the list of those entitled to information as to my wellness post- surgery. No one who says ‘Keep me posted’ deserves to know diddly squat about me and my life..

“I will no longer cross oceans for those who are not willing to cross a stream for me………"

This morning as you head into Friday please honour yourself and your sobriety enough to know that sometimes letting go can be hard and challenging but stop walking across oceans for those who do not care for you the way they once did. Let it go and “Remember, you are the main act, not a warm-up, and this, my friend, is no dress rehearsal. This is it. The curtain is well and truly up.” PLEASE know I am crossing an ocean for you each morning when I arrive in your inbox....j oin me ladies as I look skyward and say, not today lady, not today. Lots of love Susan

Sue O- Robinson TARA I think we have all had the experience where we do NOT apply diligence to our sobriety and wind up right back on the hamster wheel of torment, embarrassment, and shame. Diligence is at play when I'm completing my Pledge 100 homework, participating in our WhatsApp discussions, having a plan and 'pretty glass' at the ready when I am looking for a special NA drink to begin my evening, trying hard to make it to at least one meeting a week, and myriad other little things I'm doing that are amazingly becoming DILIGENCE in all caps. I need this. I’ve grown complacent in my addiction over the last two years and it led to relapse. So, DILIGENCE must be front and center in my life. Whatever it takes will be my mantra. I learned last Saturday that I did not plan accordingly and it almost tripped me up, I must always be prepared(diligent) for the witch to surprise me. She has nothing new to say and nothing good to offer me GREAT habits. Damn straight! -Judy M. - Robinson TARA Yes, I believe that it’s absolutely necessary to practice diligence in my sobriety- it’s really key to maintaining this way of living long-term. Routine is so important to me right now. I check in here first thing in the morning, say my pledge, and Pledge for another day on my sober app. Being part of a sober community here is so validating and empowering. I’m diligent about connecting here and responding. I incorporate exercise into the day at some point as much as possible. Lately, work has been crazy and I’ve been mentally exhausted. I’ve been thinking that I need to put a bit more focus on that area - moving my body saves my sanity and I’ve been making excuses to myself. I can at least squeeze in 21 minutes (and more!) of movement, as that is when I get relief emotionally from the stressors of the day. I always feel happier, and without a doubt, it helps me stay sober. I’ve heard people say as they reach a year, or two years sober, that they are just sick and tired of focusing on being sober. I really don’t understand that, for me anyway. I spent 40 years or so drinking. I want the rest of my life to be reveling in the fact that I kicked this addiction beast to the curb and started really living my life, healthier, happier, and free. I wouldn’t trade this for anything, and I’ll stay diligent and give my sobriety whatever it takes to keep it! Julie - Robinson TARA

My life’s greatest challenge to date is to stay diligent to the promise/ pledge I have made to myself to live a sober life, free from addiction. I practice this diligence by keeping my priorities in proper order beginning with my morning rituals and routine. . I practice this diligence by reminding myself that my future has no room in it for past mistakes. I practice this diligence by disciplining myself to exercise and develop good eating habits, to manage my finances wisely, and to strive to be excellent rather than mediocre lazy or slothful. Finally, I practice this diligence by incorporating ‘ Diligence - 21 into my daily life. All of this is hard work, however much easier than constantly living a life that is out of control. .-Jenny - Robinson TAR A Yes, I am diligent about my sobriety. I was thinking today about complacency … when you reach a point where you think you’ve nailed it … you become ‘sloth’ with the thought which can lead you down the garden path of romanticising drinking. What’s frightening is how very easy it is to do … we allow our minds to drift and we approach things half-heartedly and lose focus of the big picture … before you know it moderation Marcus - or in my case - bingeing Betty comes to a knocking on the door! She came once to remind me she was still about but I told her ever so politely to f*** off! So I’m under no illusion … she’s a sneaky little bitch who’s always on the lookout for an opportunity … oh she’s tired I’ll pop in … oh she’s bored I’ll pop in … oh she’s having a BBQ I’ll pop in. Dropping my guard is tempting fate and it’s diligence that protects my sobriety … so piss off Betty go and ruin your own life. -Jean P- Robinson TARA It has really been an eye-opener for me to discover how important patience is to my sobriety. It fosters contentment. I had no idea how impatient I was with everything in life until I stopped drinking. Being able to clearly give thought to daily living and the smallest things that before would aggravate me. Waiting in line for a cup of coffee for instance- the old me would be thinking what the hell is wrong with these people, I need to get back to work, frustration mounting - over a coffee!! Now I say to myself- this place is short-staffed like everywhere else in town, these young kids are doing the best they can, smile and be grateful for your coffee. It’s the little things like this that can turn an entire way of thinking around because one act of impatience usually led to more. -Julie-Robinson TARA.

gratitude

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow ― Melody Beattie

direction

I used to spend so much time reacting and responding to everyone else that my life had no direction. Other people's lives, problems, and wants set the course for my life. Once I realized it was okay for me to think about and identify what I wanted, remarkable things began to take place in my life ― Melody Beattie

TALES FROM CROWS CORNER BY ROSE MACDONALD

Meet Hola Sober sister rose, who is sober and a witch!

She recently qualified and took the witch name 'Crow.' Rose believes we seem to be losing female power and becoming a man’s chattel. Additionally, her friends comment on her bad driving, so I thought I’ll show them flying around on my broomstick!

Rose, what is your sober date? My sober date is 27th November 2002. I was taken to my first AA meeting by my cousin Brendan, recently deceased, to whom I am very grateful. Do you have sober daily routines- rituals that are your non-negotiables? If so, what are they? (Prayer-Meetings- Exercise) I got sober in the rooms of AA and through the 12-step programme, and have not had a drink since my first meeting. My ritual on waking is to ask for another sober day and for my Higher Power to guide me through the day. I attend regular AA meetings and go for a walk on the Prom by the Irish Sea at least once a day. What made you even think of becoming a witch? I was at my hairdresser’s and there was a poster on a show for the course. Even though it was one week past the start date I rang up and they said “yes.” My motivation was one of curiosity and that looks interesting, and so it was! Can you tell me a little about your course? A group of women and 1 man (about 10 of us) met on a weekly basis for a couple of hours, for 6 weeks, in the common room of an artist’s studio. The Chief Witch, Becca led us expertly through the course aided by her assistant. There was a strong practical element where I made: a witch’s wand, a spell jar, and a spell and learned about the theory of witching. This included learning about:

Hermetic Principles ·The wheel of the year ·The witches' Rune

At the end of the course which had been disrupted by Covid and family illnesses, 3 of us went through an initiation ceremony in Becca’s living room where we made a dedication to serve our Goddess and chose a witch name. My Witch name is Crow and my Goddess is the Celtic Warrior Queen Maeve. Part of the ritual was unnervingly like a Catholic Mass, to which Becca said, “They pinched it from us in the first place.” What do you hope to use your 'witch qualification' for? We have 13 goals of a witch which align with my sobriety, these being: know yourself; know your craft; learn and grow; apply knowledge with wisdom; achieve balance; keep your words in good order; keep your thoughts in good order; celebrate life; attune to the cycles of the earth; breath and eat correctly; exercise the body; meditate; honour the God and Goddess. Have you found meditation, podcasts, or books helpful in recovery? I have finally settled on my friend John Siddique’s style of meditation. He introduced me to Yoga Nidra and silent meditation. I attended his weekly meditation class and found that my energy was replenished after an hour with him. I have attended meditation retreats in Devon and Scotland and found the complete silence scary to start with. We had to do “jobs.” I was cleaning windows mindfully and then I started to cry as through the act of cleaning a window I saw how I was living my life. The sheer beauty of SamyeLing took my breath away and deepened by the appreciation of nature. I am not a Podcast collector, but the same cannot be said of my bulging bookcases. I like the comfort of books. I am very attracted to the Buddhist philosophy so was very disappointed when Noah Levine’s recovery programme fell into disrepute because of his sexual harassment (sometimes called 13th stepping in AA). My go-to books are the Big Book of AA and the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions.

·Goddesses ·Phases of the moon ·Divination ·Scrying ·Using a pendulum ·Pentacles ·Looking for signs in nature ·Types of spells ·Magical symbols ·

What was the last book you read about sobriety?

I am currently reading Gabor Mate’s latest – “the Myth of Normal.” I attended a conference where he spoke and was very impressed by his understanding of addiction and his willingness to share his own experience. Do you have any sober heroes/heroines? I do. I had the great honour of knowing Danny McLoughlin in the last couple of years before he died of cancer. With one of the worst stories I have ever heard, he turned his life around, retrained as an addiction counsellor in the US, and was a staunch AAer. I used to invite him for breakfast on a Sunday, finished off by a good coffee at Mojo’s and then an excellent ice-cream. He really brought the Celt out in me, an aspect of myself that gets squashed, it may be why I now live next to the Irish Sea. Over a year ago since his death, I do miss his company, his storytelling, wisdom, and sense of good fun. If there is someone out there reading your story what would be your top sober tip be? ·Just don’t take that first drink, it’s the one that does the damage. Why would you want that chaos back in your life? If in doubt go to a meeting. Have a backup plan. I always drive myself to places, so that, if required, I can take myself out of the dangerous situation. ·My sobriety is the most important thing to me, I wear it close to my heart.

SUNDAY KITCHEN HOLA SOBER

SIMPLE SHEPHERDS PIE

1 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste 3 large (1 1/2 to 2 pounds) potatoes , peeled and quartered 8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter, divided 1 medium onion, chopped (about 1 1/2 cups) 1 to 2 cups mixed vegetables, such as diced carrots, corn, or peas 1 1/2 pounds ground round beef 1/2 cup beef broth 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Pepper and/or other seasonings of choice

METHOD Boil the potatoes:

Place the peeled and quartered potatoes in a medium-sized pot. Cover with at least an inch of cold water. Add a teaspoon of salt. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and cook until tender (about 20 minutes).

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Sauté the vegetables:

While the potatoes are cooking, melt 4 tablespoons of the butter in a large sauté pan on medium heat. Add the chopped onions and cook until tender, about 6 to 10 minutes. If you are including vegetables, add them according to their cooking time. Carrots should be cooked with the onions because they take as long to cook as the onions do. If you are including peas or corn, add them toward the end of the cooking of the onions, or after the meat starts to cook, as they take very little cooking time. Add ground beef to the pan with the onions and vegetables. Cook until no longer pink. Drain the pan of excess fat, if necessary (anything more than 1 tablespoon). Season with salt and pepper. Add the Worcestershire sauce and beef broth. Bring the broth to a simmer and reduce heat to low. Cook uncovered for 10 minutes, adding more beef broth if necessary to keep the meat from drying out. Taste the cooked filling and, if needed, add more salt, pepper, Worcestershire, or other seasonings of your choice. When the potatoes are done cooking (a fork can easily pierce), remove them from the pot and place them in a bowl with the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter. Mash with a fork or potato masher, taste, and adjust seasonings with salt and pepper. Spread the cooked filling in an even layer in a large baking dish (such as a 9 x 13-inch casserole. Spread the mashed potatoes over the top of the ground beef. Rough up the surface of the mashed potatoes with a fork so there are peaks that will get well-browned. You can even use a fork to make creative designs on the mashed potatoes. serve

Salmon + Veg Packets

For the Harissa Mayonnaise:

1/4 cup mayonnaise 1 teaspoon harissa paste 1 teaspoon honey 1 tablespoon lime juice

For the salmon packets:

2 to 4 teaspoons olive oil 1 yellow potato (6 ounces) potato, very thinly sliced 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 2 handfuls (4 ounces) fresh sugar snap peas, ends trimmed 12 to 16 cherry tomatoes, halved 2 teaspoons lime juice 2 (6-ounce) skinless salmon fillets

METHOD

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Make the harissa mayonnaise: In a small bowl, stir the mayonnaise, harissa paste, honey, and lime juice. Assemble the packets: On a work surface, place an 18-inch-long piece of foil, preferably non-stick, with the long side parallel to the countertop. Brush the face-up side of the foil with 1 teaspoon of oil. (Optional: Instead of oiling the foil, cut a piece of parchment that is 9- by 12-inches and place it over one-half of the foil.) Arrange half the potatoes on the oiled side of the foil and sprinkle with a pinch of salt and a pinch of pepper. Place half the snap peas over the potatoes, followed by half the cherry tomatoes. Sprinkle lightly with salt and pepper, and drizzle with 1 teaspoon oil. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of lime juice. Place a salmon fillet over the vegetables and spread with half the harissa mayonnaise. Fold the foil over the fish so the ends meet. Fold all three open sides to make a border of about 1 inch, and crimp them to tightly seal the packet. Place on a baking sheet. Repeat with the second sheet of foil, vegetables, and salmon. Bake the packets for 20 to 22 minutes, or until the salmon and vegetables are cooked through. Carefully open one of the packets to peek. The internal temperature of the thickest part of fish should register 140oF on an instant-read thermometer Open the packets carefully (be prepared for hot steam to escape.) Slide a large spatula under the potatoes and transfer the vegetables and fish to dinner plates. Garnish with the lime slices and a few sprinkles of chopped parsley. Serve with rice, if you like. We love this here at home as it's tasty and soothing on a cool autumnal evening. This recipe which is so easy is from tSIMPLY RECIPES and you can read it here

card of the week

Five of Swords This card looks a little ominous and confrontational, and it certainly can be. I was sorely tempted to slip it back into the deck and try again but that would be cheating wouldn’t it. Each of the cards has something to say, whether we want to listen or not. The largest character in the forefront has a smirk on his face as he gathers the surrendered swords. The people leaving look beaten and dejected. Smirking guy doesn’t seem to really care how he won just as long as he did. Shesh, who invited Uncle (fill in with appropriate name here) to Thanksgiving Dinner! In an effort to be heard, we can sometimes be really loud and aggressive thinking we are being bold and assertive. I’m having flashbacks to the vaccine debates between friends and families over the last few years. At what cost to our relationships did some of those impassioned debates lead to? Words have been said that can’t be unsaid, or maybe a competition has been won using methods that were below the belt. Ish, thank goodness I don’t drink wine while cooking that holiday dinner anymore is all I can think of when I see the Five of Swords!! If you have said something that makes you feel icky when you think about it then say you’re sorry, it’s not rocket science. Texting with sad face emoji’s is not a proper apology, just sayin. If everything is peachy with your conscience and someone is making an attempt to make amends put down your halo and open the door a crack, we have all been on both sides of this card. ”

To all ladies who give permission to publish your words. Thank you, Lisa Wilde for all your support, words, and help - thank you.

Note: I am not a professional designer, writer, or creator; I am a woman who drank wine and now talks about not drinking creating this platform and magazine in a moment of pure madness offering EVERYTHING for FREE.

If there are spelling mistakes or grammatical errors, cut me some slack as this is a FREE MAGAZINE made with love.

The HOLA SOBER PLATFORM (Magazine, Meetings, Emails) would not be possible without the financial and loving support of my husband, and three sons who support this project 100% . Shout out, as always, to Deb + Judith, Gee + Colette ❤️
