Shouting Out the Great Moms I Know A World of Difference

This month we celebrate Mother’s Day, and I thought I’d take the opportunity to talk about a few of the moms in my life. It’s a tough job, but these women tackle it gracefully. They work hard, put their kids first, and love their families. It’s an example we all should follow. Of course, there’s no one more special than my wife, Deanna, the mother of my three children. She’s a fantastic role model for our daughters: She’s smart, committed, strong, and loving. She always has a smile, a hug, and an open heart and mind for them. But she’s no pushover! Not much slips by her, as my kids know well. Deanna is the glue that binds our family together, something that is never more apparent than when she travels for work; when it’s just me, I have no clue where anyone needs to be, and my kids get nothing but microwave mac ‘n’ cheese for the week. Although Deanna’s own mom is no longer with us, her presence is felt in our family daily. My wife’s mom was a great woman, and we miss her every day. My own mother was a single mom for my brother and my teenage years and raised us to be hard working, respectful, patient, loyal, and kind. She just retired after 25-plus years as a middle school math teacher, “mothering” countless classes of kids year after year. Middle

schoolers can be a tough crowd, and math is sometimes a hard sell. Her dedication to the kids never wavered, and I know she made a difference in many lives. She’s also very present in the lives of her grandchildren — five girls! I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that for “Mimi” the sun rises and sets with her grandkids. She comes up from Miami almost every weekend, and the girls just love her. She’s at dance shows, soccer games, karate classes, and anywhere else those five Shullman girls are. And she always has a smile that exudes pure joy. She’s taught all of them how to ride a bike — most recently my own Kate — and has more energy than all of us parents combined! I’m glad that there’s a day this month to recognize the hard work that moms do. It’s

often a thankless task, and there are no sick days from being a mom. I want to thank my wife for being a fantastic mom. And I want to thank my own mom for raising my brother and me and taking care of our kids whenever we need a hand. (We’re especially going to need that during the upcoming teenage years!) Take time to say “thanks” to the mothers in your own life this month. In our lives, and the lives of many others, they’ve made a world of difference. And on a final, personal note, as the father of three daughters and uncle of three nieces, I could not be more thankful that my girls have such wonderful examples of strong, caring women in their lives.

Have a great May,

The Ride of Your Life

The Best Amusement Parks in America (That Aren’t Disney)

Summertime means family vacations, and few places offer as much family fun as your classic amusement park. If you’d rather avoid the high prices and long lines at the home of a certain mouse, there are countless amusement parks all across this great nation! Consider some of these for your family's vacation destination: Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio Found on every thrill-seeker’s to-do list, Cedar Point has been dubbed the “roller coaster capital of the world.” Cedar Point is home to 17 current and former world record-holding roller coasters, including the Valravn, the world’s tallest, fastest, and longest dive coaster. Even

if roller coasters aren’t your thing, guests can enjoy other thrill rides, family rides, attractions, and several kid sections throughout the park. Knoebels, Elysburg, Pennsylvania Knoebels is the park for families on a budget, offering free parking and admittance — guests just pay for any food or rides they enjoy during their stay. While everyone else is busy scrambling for the “latest and greatest,” Knoebels prides itself on nostalgia, with bumper cars, wooden coasters, and a classic carousel among an array of other attractions. Knott’s Berry Farm, Buena Park, California Don’t let its age fool you; one of

America’s oldest amusement parks has no problem keeping up with the

Braces Behind Your Teeth?

The Pros and Cons of Lingual Braces

to catch on. For one, most dentists don’t offer them because they require specialized training to install, even more so than Invisalign. But an increasing number of orthodontists do have this specialized training and are qualified to install them.

Anyone who has had regular braces knows what a bother nightly brushing can be. You can imagine how much more difficult that same task would be behind your teeth, where no mirrors can help you. Lingual braces move the teeth more gradually, so you’d have them longer than regular braces or Invisalign. Unfortunately, some patients have noted increased discomfort and higher costs associated with lingual braces, too. Still, both lingual braces and Invisalign are on the rise due to their aesthetic benefits. In fact, if you asked most orthodontists what the fastest growing part of their business is, most would answer the same thing: adult braces. But which is better, Invisalign or lingual? You be the judge.

You’ve probably heard of Invisalign, the “invisible braces” made of clear plastic. They’re popular among adults wanting to avoid the whole “brace face” look. But you might not be aware of another kind of braces that aren’t invisible, per se — you just can’t see them. It makes sense that, somewhere in modern orthodontic history, someone eventually asked, “What if you could have braces behind your teeth?” Lingual braces are made of light metals, just like regular braces, but they face the tongue rather than the outside world. The technique has been around for upwards of 30 years, so you’re probably wondering: Why isn’t it more popular? Lingual braces are actually on the rise, but there are a few reasons it’s taken so long for them

CACHE YOUR DREAMS

in the Great Outdoors

Want to be a modern-day treasure hunter? Geocaching is for you! These days, just about any kind of outdoor adventure can be planned and tracked via smartphone. An added benefit of this is being able to partake in an activity many outdoor enthusiasts have never heard of: geocaching. Now, you can spend your afternoons hunting for hidden trinkets, and all you need is a GPS. Geocaching has its roots in the 150-year- old game of letterboxing, in which people hid boxes containing small handwritten letters in outdoor locations. Once exclusively a tool of the U.S. Military, Global Positioning Systems are essential to geocaching. The hobby officially began in

2000, when accurate GPS readings became available to the masses due to the military’s removal of Selective Availability, a program intended to limit non-military use of the system. It didn’t take long for people to begin concealing and hunting caches throughout the world. Geocaching originally required the purchase of an expensive handheld GPS unit, but can now be done with a smartphone. Everything you need to get started can be found on Geocaching.com. Simply create an account and follow the instructions. One really cool aspect of geocaching is how it marries technology with the great outdoors. It’s every parent’s solution to

getting their child out from in front of the TV. Plus, it can be a fun side activity to add to any outdoor adventure. Most importantly, geocaching is an inexpensive way to spend quality time in nature, alone or with others.
