WHERE CAN A JEW FIND CHRIST?

Science and the Bible by Bolton Davidheiser, Ph.D.

On street corners, in homes, in shops, and in our witnessing cen ters, our workers faith fully proclaim the story of redemption accord ing to Moses and the prophets, and the gos pel message from the New Testament, and Jews are finding the Saviour. A Jewish boy accepted a tract, "Isaiah's Por trait of Messiah" and immediately asked, "Can you tell me more about this?" There on a street corner in Chicago a 12 year old boy listened intently to the skillful presentation of the Scriptures and ac cepted Jesus Christ as his Messiah and Sav iour. A middle-aged Jew ess, after hearing the gospel for several years at Miami Beach called and said, "I am terribly distressed. Please come over. I must find the Lord today."

V i t a l i s m m a y be defined as the concept that there is a vital force of some sort operating in living things which is different in kind from forces acting in non-living sub stances. In cqjitrast to this, mechan ism holds that all functions of living organisms are explainable on a me chanical basis. A textbook of chemis try published in 1967 says that by 1850 the theory of vitalism was dead. This announcement of the death of vitalism, though coming nearly 120 years after the alleged fact, may be premature. S. O. Mast of the Johns Hopkins University and Jacques Loeb of the University of California, both born after 1850, had a sort of running feud over the vitalism vs. mechanism question. Authors of textbooks are usually careful to avoid vitalistic and teleological statements, but as recent ly as 1949 a textbook of physiology said that physical and chemical laws as we now know them cannot account for the selective activities of the kidney tubules in excreting some sub stances and resorbing others, and said that this same “ vital activity” occurs also in the digestive system. At one time it was thought by some that it would be impossible to synthesize organic compounds be cause they were produced by living creatures. But in 1828 Friederich Wohler synthesized urea. There is a commemorative plaque in his hon or in Munich, Germany, and it con tains a vial of the urea he obtained in the laboratory. In the eyes of the scientific world, Loeb gained an important victory for the mechanists when he succeed ed in producing larvae from unfer tilized sea urchin eggs and tadpoles from unfertilized frog eggs. A current issue is: Can life be produced in the laboratory? This hinges around the definition of the word life, and there are a few who believe it has already been done. Others believe it will he done in the forseeable future. If or when some thing is produced in the laboratory which by virtue of a definition is called living, it will be quite diifer- ent from the simplest protozoan.

The boast of the mechanists is : “We will explain everything. Give us time and we will explain scientifical ly all that has not yet been ex plained.” Christian people oppose this. It proposes to make God un necessary and it leads ultimately to a God-is-dead theology. Some Chris tians have at times spoken unwisely concerning matters about which they did not have sufficient understanding. This has led to a situation something like the one illustrated by the story of the shepherd boy who cried “Wolf! Wolf!” when there was no wolf. Then when the wolf did come, no one would believe his warning call. The cries of the mechanists, conceded or feared by some vitalists, have been: “ If man can synthesize or ganic compounds, vitalism will he dead,” and, “ If man can cause un fertilized eggs to hatch, vitalism will be dead,” and, “ If man can produce ‘life’ in the laboratory, vitalism will be dead.” This has led to the present cry: “ Man will soon play the role of God, so God is dead!” The general public gets the im pression that the scientists always accomplish what they say they will and that their alleged opponents, who are usually religious people, are al ways shown to be wrong. There is confusion about what is Scripture and what is the opinion of men, and even between Scripture and super stition. As in the case of the shep herd hoy, there comes the inevitable day when the wolf is real. Since the public is so impressed with the ac complishments of science, the idea of a time of judgment by a just and holy God comes to seem like an illu sionary cry of warning, heard too often to be believed any more. But God has said, “ I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent . . . ” (I Cor. 1:19-24). It is clear in Scripture that God will not permit anyone to take His place. “ I will not give my glory to another” (Isaiah 48:11). The first sin and the one which caused the fall of the hu man race was yielding to the tempta tion, “ Ye shall be as gods” (Gen. 3 :5 ). HU
