world has said, " T h is man hatn done notmng am i s s !" Jesus is sentenced as a blasphemer, n e claimed to be the Messiah, the Son of God, the equai of God. If He was jiot, the sentence was a just one. If He was only a man His high claims were truly blasphemous and He Him- self deserved the most ignoble death. Every • man and woman who denies the deity of Christ might well ponder this point. Was He what He claimed to be? If so, He will be the judge of tn'em who deny His claims and make h i m only a man. Then His claims were blasphemous and He deserved the death He died. Here is a scene full of contrasts: The spotless Son of (iod—accused of sin. God. the Son—charged with blas- phemy. He who claimed to be the life of men—sentenced to death. The Great High Priest—committed to death by a Jewish high priest. The Creator of the world—spit upon by His creatures. That God did not blot out the nation whose chiefs were guilty of sucti atroci- ties against His Son is greatest proof of His great mercy.

quenee. What unholy things are done in the name of God! What unholy, un- sanctified schemes are resorted to by Christians and churches, by which the blessed name of Christ is defamed! How often are cnurch courts, Christless courts. (5) THE SLANDEROUS SENTENCE. The -high priest assumes the right- eously indignant attitude; he has suc- ceeded in bringing from the prisoner's own lips the testimony he desired. In mock indignation and with theat- rical effect he rends his garmentB and in feigned humility he transfers the de- cision to the accusers. Let their lips speak the sentence, " H e is worthy of d e a t h ." What a travesty upon religion! What a burlesque on a court of inquiry in which a human life is involved and that life the only spotless life ever lived! What a revelation ot numan nature, un- der the guise of serving God, influenced by envy and bitter hatred! The high- est official of the chosen people of God, descending to the lowest level of hy- pocrisy, cruelty and injustice and that against the one man of wnom the
