FOUR GREAT PSALMS.

LESSON 19, SUNDAY NOV. 6, 1910. The Wise and the Wicked Man. (Lesson in contrasts.) Psalm 1. The first Psalm is an introduction to the whole book of Psalms. The main subject of the book is the salvation of the righteous and the punishment of the wicked. Here we have the experi- ence of the soul that knows God in its development as it walks with God through life's changing scenes. The Wise Man, 1-S. The Psalm opens with a benediction. In the original it is plural and can be translated, ' ' Oh, the blessednesses.'' Three things are declared of Him nega- tively. His Walk. It is not with the ungodly (Psa. 81:12). Those who know not God, who are wilful in their ways (Prov. 1: 15, 4:4). He walks as did Enoch with God (Gen. 5:24), and in the light (1 ono. 1:7). His Standing. Is not with sinners, 'inose who are outbroken in wickedness. Once he stood with them, now he stands against them. He stands in the grace of God (Rom. 5:2). He stands with loins girt with truth (Eph. 6:13, 14).

those who make light of holy things, who mock at sin and the word of God. He sits not at the feet of infidels who blaspheme his Lord (Psa. 26:4-5, Jer. 15:17, Prov. 1:22). Three things are affirmed of him positively. His Delight is in 'God's Word (Psa. 40:8, Pso. 112:1, Psa. 119:11, Jer. 15: 16), and upon that Word he meditated (Pso. 104:34, Josh. 1:8, 1 Tim. 4:15). His Character. He is like a tree, not a volunteer tree but a planted tree, whihc shall not be pulled up (Matt. 15: 13); with roots in the rivers (Jer. 17: 8, Ezek. 17:8). A Fruit Tree (Matt. 21:34, Jno. 15:16). Evergreen. His Work shall be blessed (Psa. 128: 2, Tosh. 1:7, 8, Isa. 3:10). The Wicked Man. Three things are affirmed here of the ungodly: Chaff. How striking the contrast— a tree and chaff (Psa. 35:5, Isa. 17:13). Only goou to be burned— worthless, useless. No Standing. God will say " I know you n o t ." Matt. 7:23. He will, stand condemned at God's bar of justice. Perish. He can not stand with the righteous. He can not stand in the presence of the Lord. He must be cast out (Jude 15, Mai. 3:18, Matt. 13:49). Meditate on Luke 21:36.

His Seat. Is not with the scornful,
