LESSON 20, SUNDAY, NOY. 13, 1910. The Shepherd and the Sheep. Psa. 23. This is. the pearl of the Psalms. The picture is one of peace and calm de- light, of soul at rest with its Lord. Volumes have been written on it. We can look upon a few of its beauties and make them our own. Verse 1. Relationship. David takes his place as one of the Lord's sheep and rests quietly in the consciousness oi His ability to supply all of his needs. He virtually says, My shepherd shall supply all my need (Phil. 4:19). He snail not want anything (Psa. 34:10, Phil. 4:19). The sheep lie down when they are full. The Gospel is full of precious promises upon which tne soul can find rest and satisfaction (Ezek. 34:13, 14). Here also are still waters. Suggestive of the gracious operation of the Holy Spir- it who floods the soul witn peace like a river (Job 34:29). Restoration. There is refreshing re- vival for the'soul. When it wanders, jui^e brings it back. When it weakens He gives strength. When it loses its joy, He restores it (Psa. 51:10-12). Righteo.s Paths. All roads lead to Rome. So all righteous paths lead to Himself and to His glory. He leads, He guides with His eye (Psa. 32:8). He says, " T h is is the way, walk ye in it (Isa. 30:21). We would never be able to cross the desert unless He led (Isa. 42:16). Repose. ' ' He maketh me to lie downn." Blessed compulsion.
To him who walks with his faithful Shepherd earth is but a shadow. With Himself near no harm can betide. With rod and staff He rules and guides (Psa. 3; 6, Isa. 43:1-2). Refreshment. Here is a feast for the hungry soul. In the midst of the sinful world, with its Christ haters, the Lord's table. ' 1 Wine that maketh glad the heart of man, oil to make his face to shine and bread which strengthened a man's h e a r t " (Psa. 104:15). The Spirit o^ God to cheer us. The anointing of the Spirit upon us to give us unction and Christ Himself to feed upon (Isa. 25:6). Rejoicing. The Shepherd going be- fore, goodness and mercy the attending angels, coming after and the home in heaven awaiting, what more could a pilgrim ask? What assurance of salva- tion is here (Psa. 21:1-6, 2 Tim. 4:18, 2 Cor. 5:1).
LESSON 21, SUNDAY, NOV. 20, 1910. The Soul and Its Sovereign.
Psalm 34.
Here is a glorious Psalm, and every verse would make a great text for a sermon. Divide it into foru parts and study it. Praise, 1-3. Praise is' comely and it is good to sing praises unto our God (Psa. 147:1). Paul takes it up and says, ' 1 Rejoice in the Lord a l w a y" (Phil. 4:4). We can all glory in the Lord (2 Cor. 10:17), and be glad of Christ can be magnified in our body (Phil; 1:20). Let all the people praise him, saying, "Salvation and
Resoltuion. " I will fear no e v i l ."
