Abstract The private sector is a key player alongside the public sector and civil society in the system for preventing and combating corruption. For the private sector to be effective within this system, it must play a strategic role in promoting the values of integrity and transparency, which are essential for preventing corruption, stopping it when it occurs, and addressing its consequences. This study aims to achieve several objectives, including but not limited to: identifying the main dimensions of corruption regardless of its form or appearance, highlighting some common types of corruption within the private sector and examining their negative impacts, reviewing international responses aimed at preventing corruption in the private sector, and understanding the strategic role the private sector can and should play in anti-corruption efforts. The research is based on the hypothesis that the private sector – as composed of various entities, institutions, and companies – currently lacks a strategic role in promoting integrity and transparency as tools for preventing and combating corruption. This absence weakens the overall anti-corruption framework and hinders any effective efforts to tackle corruption. The study addresses the problem of the private sector’s limited or missing contribution to strengthening values of integrity and transparency in anti- corruption initiatives. It concludes with a set of findings and recommendations, which include: the urgent need to build a business environment characterised by honesty and transparency; fostering cooperation and active engagement between the private sector, public authorities and civil society in developing and implementing a national strategy to promote integrity and transparency; establishing and enforcing codes of conduct and ethical standards that support corruption prevention; adopting and implementing compliance programmes aimed at preventing and fighting corruption; and collaborating with law enforcement agencies to detect and prosecute corrupt practices.
