This week has been no different and started with a very interesting talk by ex-student Klara Karimy who came in to speak with our Sixth Form students about taking up a HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE
A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER
This week is Safeguarding Awareness Week, an annual event led by the TES, highlighting significant and emerging issues in safeguarding. This year’s theme is Empowering and Protecting Students in a Digital World. Research collated by Tes as part of Safeguarding Awareness Week shows that while three quarters of children say technology and the internet are key to their independence nearly half of them (43%) feel pressured to keep up with social media trends and (48%) that changing technology makes it harder to control their online privacy. Worryingly more than two thirds of children report experiencing online harm and nearly half (48%) of 15–16 year old girls have been contacted by strangers online. The Anna Freud Centre have produced an on demand webinar ‘Supporting your young person to stay well online’, to help parents support young people to stay safe online and they are also hosting a live webinar on 3rd June at 12pm, ‘Weathering the storms of strong teen emotions: do’s, don’ts and when to consider talking to someone’. Parents and carers can register here. There is also a live webinar, ‘Helping Teenage Boys Navigate the Online World’ coming up on 10th June, presented by Natasha Devon, ‘Clicks: How to Be Your Best Self Online’, and Sam Delaney, a CALM ambassador. career in Law. I am sure it has inspired many of them to follow this path. Our Year 10 French students returned to school on Tuesday after their fabulous trip to Paris over a long weekend. They did a walking tour tak- ing in the sites of Paris, took a boat trip along the Seine and importantly, visited a chocolate shop! On Wednesday Y10 students also took part in an inter-school Physics Quiz (more info from JGC). On Thursday our Y10 German students made a very early start for their trip to Boppard in Germany, they have already visited Köln with a daring climb to the top of the cathedral and a tasty visit to the Lindt shop! Year 8 has also waved us goodbye today as 60 students from across the year have headed off for both physical and mathematical challenges on their PGL Maths Trip to Osmington Bay in Dorset. We look forward to see- ing the photos and hearing all about it when we return after half-term. Very well done to pupils, Amber R, 9FDO, Selin Y (8PIR), Bea S (8STR), Mabel J (8EBH) and Hattie H (8EDA) for their win at the Thames Ditton Regatta last weekend, winning two tankards for their efforts. I wish you all a pleasant half-term and encourage those students who are taking their exams to make time to rest and relax, alongside any further revision. BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘Things a Bright Girl Can Do’ by Sally Nicholls
Set in the early twentieth century, this novel follows three brave young women as they all become involved in the Suffragette movement. I loved how Nicholls brought the time period to life, showing what it felt like to be a woman and girl during that turbulent time. But if historical novels aren’t usually your thing, don’t be put off. It feels really modern and fresh, exploring issues like class differences as the three main characters come from different backgrounds. There is also a beautiful love story between two of the characters. It has something for everyone!

U13 Cricket Tournament v Orleans Park
Year 9/10 Rounders
Year 7/8 Rounders
This week the Year 7 Cricket team unfortunately lost their first league match against Orleans Park with a score of 47-57 runs but they played really well as a team and as you can see from the photo, had a great time too! The cricket tournaments were cancelled due to the weather but will resume after half term. On Tuesday afternoon a group of Sports Leaders from years 7-9 helped out at the Richmond Primnary Schools Golf Tournament at Strawberry Hill Golf Course. They did an excellent job and were wonderful ambassadors for our school.
BEHAVIOUR FOCUS For the Summer Term the school’s leadership team has chosen to focus on our First Rule at Waldegrave: Respect and value learning, each other and our environment. As part of this we are asking students to respect and value learning, putting aside distractions and following our uniform policy by wearing the correct uniform at all times. The full unform policy can be viewed here. PARENT GOVERNOR RECRUITMENT Our Governing Board is currently recruiting for a parent governor who wants to work at a strategic level to develop the school. We would be particularly interested in appointing someone who works or has experience in Higher Education or Careers Education. Continuous training and development are key to the role and will be provided to help you acquire/develop the skills to be an effective governor and you can read more about the work our governors do on our website. We have sent a letter home with further information and details on how to apply.
