Find Me!
H ere is a verse that relieves me of the altogether futile at tempt to whip up my own faith: “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord 55 How did I receive Him? In a wonderfully helpless condition! I couldn’t have ex plained it theologically but suddenly I saw to my great horror that I was in desperate need. I was lost in every sense of the word! I was 33 years old and ashamed to begin run ning this way and that, crying at the sky, “Do something. Somebody do something to find me!” But I felt that way. And in that moment of utter need I threw myself upon Christ! I received Him as my Saviour, knowing in my heart that I could do absolutely nothing to save myself. But knowing that I needed desperately to be saved. I received Him in complete need. In helplessness. And the inevitable, quiet relief fol lowed only minutes later. At last I could stop running. At last I could rest. I could stop being embarrassed at my need. Since then I have seen that I can rest as I walk with Him too. In the midst of anything. I have come to Him and as He promised, He has given me rest. I realize and benefit from this rest as long as I walk as I walked when I first received this rest — in complete and en tire dependence upon Christ. Rejoicing in my need. —Eugenia Price (From Share My Pleasant Stones, Zonder- van Publ. House, Grand Rap ids.)
The barrio? Just a little Philippine village down the side road. It’s not far from a bustling metropolis, but the difference between them can’t be measured by mere geographic terms. The city is busy, fairly modern ... not too different from Main Street U.S.A. of a few years ago. But the barrio is crude, primitive. Half-naked children scurry about with the animals in the littered streets; the homes are thatched huts perched on stilts. The closest thing to an encroachment of civilization is the cigar protruding from the mouth of a native woman. That’s why this faithful pastor is here, ministering to the forgotten people of the barrio. He’s happy in the service of Christ, b u t... sometimes it isn’t easy. He gets lonesome, “hungry” for real Christian fellowship. Questions and arguments are put to him, pointing up his need of help. There is no one to whom he can turn for counsel. But there is hope in this pastor’s heart. He has heard about a “pastors’ conference” that will bring him into fellowship with many other little men of the barrios and pastors from the big cities for miles around.
