King's Business - 1958-08

“in the yet unpublished scrolls that is of revolutionary import.” While he recognizes that the time is not yet to make final conclusions there are trends that can be outlined and his torical associations that can be made from the newer materials. The most significant contribution of this volume is its inventory of man uscripts or “catalogue of the library of Qumran,” and the author’s discus sion of the implications of the various documents for Old Testament textual criticism. There is emerging a new appreciation for the Greek Septuagint and yet there are confirmations of the validity of the standard masoretic text that has been in use for so many centuries. The book is technical at points and yet should not he beyond the average seminary graduate who has studied the original languages. There is a good index and a number of plates. The author is on the faculty of Harvard Divinity School. 196 pages; cloth; Doubleday & Co., Gar den City, N.Y.; $4.50. Family A ltar Readings By B. P. Haakonson To find a book of daily devotions that w ill be adequate yet with selec tions short enough to keep the atten tion of children is not easy, but we believe this is such a book. There is enough of anecdote and illustration to maintain interest, and the applica tions of truth by simple statement and poetical material reinforce the biblical thought for the day. The compiler is a Lutheran pastor of the Evangelical Synod who comes from a fisherman’s and farmer’s back ground. 367 pages; cloth; Moody Press, Chicago; $3.50. Some intriguing thoughts are presented, but should be taken cautiously. JUDAS THE BETRAYER by Albert Nicole. 81 pages; clbth; Baker Book House, Grand Rapids; $1.50. Cruden's Dictionary of Bible Terms By Alexander Cruden This is a dictionary-type reproduc tion of the definitions and explana tions appearing at the head of the listings in the unabridged editions of Cruden’s Concordance. Entries are limited to the main words of the King James Version that re quire explanation for proper under standing. Proper names are omitted. This is a reissue of the 1840 edition. 383 pages; cloth; Baker Book House, Grand Rapids; $3.50. Our author has had access to 4/5ths of the known scrolls, four times as much material as that available to the writers of the first books on the subject. We have in this volume a reconstruction of the large and interesting headquarters and dwellings of the group at Khirbet Qumran based on the excavations. “There is material,” says Dr. Cross, The Book Ends THIS IS THE DAY by Nell Warren Outlaw. 149 pages; cloth; Zondervan Publ.
