too much in the here and now. We lose sight of the eternal through fixing bur eyes constantly upon the temporal. The tribulations of the day weigh mbre with us than the possibilities of an eternity with God. . . . It will be but a little while until you reap a hundredfold for the suffering which you now endure. Be patient and take the hard things now for the sake of the blessing a little later. —Milo F. Jamison. His Witness “And ye shall be witnesses unto me” (Acts 1 : 8 ). Thé' life of Christ is manifest to hu man gaze today; We see Him on the street, and mart, and on thë broad highway; We meet the Lord where Sorrow lives, where guilt and suffering reign, And listen to His pleading cry: “Wilt thou be whole again?” All that the Christ in Galilee began to teach and do, He by the Spirit still fulfills through loyal men and true; Though John and Paul have passed away, the Son of God and Man— Who' spake through them—will speak through us, as only Jesus can. —Harriette Bainbridge. El Shaddai “ I am the Almighty God [El Shad dai]; walk before me, and be thou perfect” (Gen. 17:1). We need to follow the example of the psalmist, who seemed to see in every trial and perplexity just an op portunity for the revelation of some new and hitherto unrealized resource and supply in God. Almost all the titles the psalmist gives to God were born out of some experience of divine protection, comfort, or deliverance. . . . So also in these days, God would rd^ veal to us through the very difficulties and trials how truly He is El Shaddai —the God who is enough. —W. H. Aidis. He Doeth Well “He hath done all things well” (Mk. 7:37). . “As for God, his way is perfect” (Psa. 18:30). Yes, God does all things well in the lives of people. . . . *In God’s eternal day we shall see things as God sees them and we shall know that it was for the good of all that a precious loved one, that child of God whom we called good, and who was so helpful, was taken home to be with the Lord. It is wonderful that the Christian can know that things are right, because God has done' them well.—Albert L. Flory. 8 . Y 9. 10.
11. All-sufficient Consolation “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shail be comforted” (Matt. 5:4). •Yo'u will never ,know how deep and ineffably precious are the consolations which Christ can give, unless you have learned despair b f self, and have come empty, helpless, hopeless, and yet confident, to that great Lord. Make your hearts empty, and He’ will fill them; recognize your desperate condi tion, and He will lift you up. It is those who have poverty of spirit, and mourning based upon it, and only they, who pass into the sweetest, sa- credest, secretest recesses of Christ’s heart, and there find all-sufficient con- •solation.—Alexander Maclaren. Driven to Prayer “Call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me” (Psa. 50:15), It is human nature, when all is well and the sky is blue, to neglect prayer in a sense of security and self- sufficiency. But let difficulty arise; let trouble invade the life or the home; then it is that men call upon God. We have often wondered how He regards this, that men will neglect Him, and call upon Him only- when driven to it. Surely we should despise ourselves for it, Yet our heavenly Father, in His great love, is unwill ing that we should go on in prayer less living; so He ' frequently sends adversity and difficulty. —Norman B. Harrison. The Vigilant Watcher “Take ye heed,/ watch and pray” (Mk. 13:33). The watcher must be in a place of vision, from which he can see thé portion of the battle line to be under observation; so the Lora’s watchman must mount into a high place, what ever the cost of getting there. The watcher must know something of his Commander’s purpose, and he must stick to his job. Watching is hard work, for the foe has many hiding places, and many subtle devices for disguising his ap proach and his plans. . . . How often has God’s work been hindered by something, small enough in itself, suddenly developing . . . and wreck ing its testimony! —The Overcomer. The Secret of Contentment “I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content” (Phil. 4:11). St. Paul, as a Christian man, had in himself all he needed to give him tranquility and peace, therefore he 12. 13. 14.
