Message from General Manager

2024 Issue 1

January 2024

Jenny McConnell, A/General Manager

I hope that everyone has had a refreshing and relaxing holiday season. 2024 will be Ryde Hospital ’ s 90th anniversary year, and will see many exciting develop- ments for the hospital. The first six months of the year we will see much change as we relocate depart- ments to enable the start of construction for the redevelopment. I appreciate that this is a lot of change for the hospital and will require a lot of collaboration to implement the changes. Once construction commences in the second half of the year, we will be a tangi- ble step closer to the delivery of the new hospital. Work will shift to creating the models of care that will be delivered within the new hospital and the possibilities that it will bring to Ryde.

In the second half of the year we expect Ryde Hospital ’ s first short notice accred- itation. Please see the information on page 3 to help prepare.

To celebrate the 90th birthday, we will hold an event in May, and then a staff ball in July – save the date for Saturday 27th July with tickets on sale soon.

Redevelopment at Ryde 2023

The Ryde Hospital Redevelopment team has achieved a lot this year including:

within a shorter construction timeframe. While this option leads to the best outcome overall, it means that during construction there will be increased building activity onsite to progress the work. This may lead to more disruption and provide less space for operations onsite than was originally expected while work is underway. The executive and the redevelopment team are work- ing through the details of the revised staging plan and what it looks like for staff, patients, suppliers and the community. We will provide further infor- mation as the revised staging is developed.

Receiving our first planning approval in June

Submitting our second planning application Completing the early works onsite

• Completing and receiving approval for schematic and detailed design • Starting tender negotiations for the construction contract which we expect to confirm in early 2024 • Continued interaction with the community, most recently at the Granny Smith Festival in October. Early works have been important to prepare the hospi- tal for the new buildings and have included the demoli- tion of three buildings and the clearing of invasive weeds from the Blue Gum High Forest. It has been rewarding to see how the look and feel of the hospital has changed during this time. This year we also completed and received approval for schematic and detailed design. Detailed design refines the design, space and construction processes for the new hospital. To inform the functional design of the future redevelopment, our project user groups provided feedback to ensure the patient voice remains at the centre of the design. Project user groups are an integral part of the redevelopment and include community rep- resentation alongside staff and wider health representa- tives. The completed hospital design allowed us to pro- ceed with the procurement for the main works contrac- tor. The construction staging for the redevelopment is be- ing considered as part of the main works procurement process. Tender discussions have shown there is an opportunity to deliver the clinical service priorities

Highlights of 2023

• Releasing the latest schematic designs and fly - through animation

• Awarding early works contract to HPAC Pty Ltd

• Public exhibition and approval of the first plan- ning application

• Public exhibition of second planning application

• Completing the early works construction

Next Steps for Redevelopment at Ryde

A competitive tender process for the construction contract is currently underway. As part of this pro- cess a construction staging program for the redevel- opment is being developed and a building contractor is expected to be appointed in 2024. We will share further information with staff, consum- ers and the community about construction impacts, staging and timelines following the appointment. We are looking forward to further progressing the Ryde Hospital Redevelopment in the year ahead.

NSQHSS Accreditation

Quality & Safety Corner

Ryde Hospital performed extremely well in 2022, achieving hospital - wide accreditation against the Na- tional Safety & Quality Health Service Standards (NSQHSS) with no recommendations. The Assessors were extremely impressed with the strong safety culture and the commitment of all staff to provide the best possible care and services to patients, carers and the community.

In 2023, mandatory Short Notice Accreditation Assessments were introduced. This means we don ’ t know when the Assessors will next visit Ryde Hospital. We will receive just 24 hours notice before ac- creditation assessment. Once on - site, the Assessors will spend most of their time visiting wards and de- partments, observing work practices, and talking to patients, visitors and staff about the care and services provided at Ryde. We need to be always ready for a snap assessment at any time. We could be assessed any time between now and December 2024. Start preparing NOW..!

Start talking about accreditation NOW ..!

The National Standards / Accreditation should be on the Agenda of your team meetings. This provides an opportunity for teams to understand the National Standards and to clarify what they need to do to be ready for an accreditation assessment.
